Thanks for details. DEBUG seems to be good fit. Attached patch for the same and

Daniel Templeton commented on YARN-6953:

Looks good to me, though I'm a bit biased. :) Should the warn really be a
warn? Seems like a pretty benign thing, especially if resource types aren't
configured. I was going to suggest making it an info instead, but from the
perspective that the majority of clusters *won't* set up resource types, it
seems like we shouldn't be logging anything at all. Maybe make it debug?

[~dan...@cloudera.com] Yes, we can go with your patch as it is simpler.

{quote}I didn't actually look to see if the null checks are needed.{quote}

I don't think these null checks are needed as job of these setter methods is to
set min and max values.

Attached a new patch. I've added the warn message as well.

Daniel Templeton commented on YARN-6953:

Getting better. Still seems rather complex. To add to the confusion, here's
what I would do:

{code}
  private static void setAllocationForMandatoryResources(
  Map res, Configuration conf) {
ResourceInformation mem = res.get(ResourceInformation.MEMORY_MB.getName());

if (mem == null) {
  //complain
} else {
  mem.setMinimumAllocation(getAllocation(conf,
  YarnConfiguration.RESOURCE_TYPES + "." + mem.getName() +
MINIMUM_ALLOCATION,
  YarnConfiguration.RM_SCHEDULER_MINIMUM_ALLOCATION_MB,
  YarnConfiguration.DEFAULT_RM_SCHEDULER_MINIMUM_ALLOCATION_MB));
  mem.setMaximumAllocation(getAllocation(conf,
  YarnConfiguration.RESOURCE_TYPES + "." + mem.getName() +
MAXIMUM_ALLOCATION,
  YarnConfiguration.RM_SCHEDULER_MAXIMUM_ALLOCATION_MB,
  YarnConfiguration.DEFAULT_RM_SCHEDULER_MAXIMUM_ALLOCATION_MB));
}

ResourceInformation cpu = res.get(ResourceInformation.MEMORY_MB.getName());

if (cpu == null) {
  //complain
} else {
  cpu.setMinimumAllocation(getAllocation(conf,
  YarnConfiguration.RESOURCE_TYPES + "." + cpu.getName() +
MINIMUM_ALLOCATION,
  YarnConfiguration.RM_SCHEDULER_MINIMUM_ALLOCATION_VCORES,
  YarnConfiguration.DEFAULT_RM_SCHEDULER_MINIMUM_ALLOCATION_VCORES));
  cpu.setMaximumAllocation(getAllocation(conf,
  YarnConfiguration.RESOURCE_TYPES + "." + cpu.getName() +
MAXIMUM_ALLOCATION,
  YarnConfiguration.RM_SCHEDULER_MAXIMUM_ALLOCATION_VCORES,
  YarnConfiguration.DEFAULT_RM_SCHEDULER_MAXIMUM_ALLOCATION_VCORES));
}
  }

  private static void getAllocation(Configuration conf, String resourceTypesKey,
  String schedulerKey, long schedulerDefault) {
long value = conf.getLong(resourceTypesKey, -1L);

if (value == -1) {
  value = conf.getLong(schedulerKey, schedulerDefault);
}

return value;
  }
{code}

I didn't actually look to see if the null checks are needed.

This code is a little longer, but for me it's clearer. I don't have to do any
mental gymnastics to understand what it's doing.

Thanks [~maniraj...@gmail.com].

I also agree with [~dan...@cloudera.com] here as WIP patch has try...catch and
other small complexities. I also liked the method modularization though.

I just try to do something on your WIP patch. Thoughts [~templedf]

I think the WIP is still much more complicated than it needs to be. All that
classloader stuff is only there to allow for the memory and CPU to be set
generically from the loop. If you stop it from trying to be generic and just
deal with the CPU and then deal with the memory, the code would be much simpler.

[~sunilg] Thanks for review.

Agree with your comments. Had similar thought (to avoid having same code) while
doing changes, fluctuated back and forth for sometime :) and settled down with
the patch later assuming mandatory resources count is always going to be 2.
Will clean it up.

[~maniraj...@gmail.com], I could see that the optimization done here in this
patch is to unroll the existing *for* loop.

But as I see here, we are filling for minimum and maximum separately. Overall
below elements are variable ones.
Top level, we need to do for minimum and maximum. So we could have
{{setAllocationForMandatoryResources}} and could take minimum or maximum as
param. Inside this method, we can invoke another method which can take
memory/vcores as input param and fill in same.
This may be more neater and readable than replicating same code in various
places.
