Morning Star.png Putin's Party Wins Electoral Landslide The Morning Star, London, 20 September 2016 Russian President Vladimir Putin's party won an overwhelming majority in Sunday's parliamentary elections, early results showed yesterday. With 93 per cent of the votes counted, United Russia was on track to take 343 of the 450 seats in the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, with 54 per cent of the vote, Central Elections Commission head Ella Pamfilova announced. Turnout was unusually low at under 50 per cent. The final count is due to be announced on Friday. The more than 100-seat gain came at the expense of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, down from 92 seats in 2011 to 42 with 13.5 per cent of the vote. The Liberal Democrats won 39 and the right-wing A Just Russia 23. Other parties failed to reach the threshold for election to the Duma.
