SADTU Mpumalanga is Holding Pickets against Teacher Posts Cuts

The South African Democratic Teachers' Union in Mpumalanga is picketing at
all Circuit and District offices of the Department of Education in the
province.

The union is aggrieved about three main issues:

        i. The Mpumalanga Department of Education, in an action
that displays cognitive dissonance, notified stakeholders that it was
intending to cut the number of teaching posts in the province from the
current 32637 to 31206, thereby butchering more than 1400 needed teaching
posts.

This diabolic and vicious declaration happens in the face of increasing
learner enrolment figures and demand for more teaching posts to be created.
Scores of temporary teachers are going to be jobless in January 2017.

ii. The Department has placed a moratorium on filling of
posts resulting in close to 1 500 vacancies in its offices and 1000 general
worker posts in schools

iii. The Department has further abolished all vacant posts in
the province. In practice, it means any vacancy that arises out of
retirement, resignation or attrition is immediately abolished from the
organogram. This has resulted in the elimination of Circuit Manager posts
and other key strategic teacher and curriculum support posts.

The union in the province is protesting against the actions of the
Department which we view as malignant to teaching and learning.

The pickets are held daily during the lunch hour so as not to affect
teaching and learning and will culminate in a provincial march on 29
September 2016.
