The factory default smart collections (see the "Smart
Collections" item on the View menu) do something very much like
that; does that do the job for you?

Look at the top of the page: "SUPPORT" is prominent in the

Re: Time to change the data store to play with time machine?

2008-04-04 Thread Rich Siegel

I suggest BareBones consider moving their data store out of the sqlite
database and store Yojimbo entries onto the file system. The time
machine backups are getting rather large when the whole database is
backed up.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, Yojimbo uses Core
Data, which is a subsystem supplied by the OS for precisely the
sort of data storage needs that Yojimbo has. The fact that Core
Data uses sqlite is an implementation detail and is, by design,
abstracted away from Core Data clients.

Since Core Data is a fundamental part of the OS, we leave it to
Apple to make sure that it plays nicely with other relevant OS
components. Since Time Machine is brand new and there are still
lots of angles to figure out, I have every confidence that in
the long term, Time Machine will evolve as necessary to
accommodate the needs of Core Data clients.

Webjimbo is a clever product which clearly fills a need which
some of our customers have (but which I don't personally share).
Adrian's clearly put a lot of effort into it, and as I recall,
it accesses our customers' data using a means that we have
created for that purpose (namely, the AppleScript interface).

So although Webjimbo represents a feature that we'd be unlikely
to implement ourselves in that form, we've no objection to its
existence per se. :-)

Re: Yojimbo 1.5 and sync services

2007-12-05 Thread Rich Siegel

On 12/5/07 at 12:58 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (John Siracusa) wrote:

When I last dealt with Yojimbo sync issues, the bottom line seemed to
be that Apple hadn't intended sync services to deal with the type and
volume of data that Yojimbo can throw at it (the best example being
the sync conflict dialog's uselessness (best case) or infinite
beachball hang (typical case) when trying to present a resolution
dialog for a large chunk of binary data).

Now that Yojimbo 1.5 and Leopard are both here, can someone from BB
give an update on the situation? Has Apple beefed up sync services so
that it can handle Yojimbo-type loads? Is there anything BB can do or
is doing to be gentler to sync services? What's the future look like
for pushing big binary blobs through .Mac sync?

I think it's important to note that "sync services" and ".Mac
syncing" are two different concepts that can't be conflated (at
least, not if you're raising technical considerations, as you have).

"Sync Services" is the specific component in the OS that is
designed to manage synchronization of objects between different
application-level clients. There is not (and, as far as I can
tell, has never been) a documented limit to the amount of data
that can be managed by Sync Services (either in an individual
object, or in a collection of synchronized data).

Synchronization across multiple computers with .Mac is managed
by the ".Mac sync client". On one hand, it's a Sync Services
client and so is not subject to any characteristic limitation in
the amount of data it can handle. On the other hand, it's a
component of the .Mac service, and is subject to the
characteristics and limitations of that particular service (not
only intrinsic bandwidth limitations, but exceptional situations
such as service outages, connection interruptions, meteor
strikes, and so forth).

There _have_ been changes to the .Mac client _and_ to the .Mac
service itself which have, over time, made life better for
Yojimbo customers who are using .Mac to synchronize large (both
aggregate, and containing large items) Yojimbo repositories. I
can't speculate on the future trend, though, because I can't
control what happens to .Mac service. :-)

[ANN] Yojimbo 1.5

2007-12-05 Thread Rich Siegel

Good { morning, afternoon, evening } all,

We are pleased and proud to announce the release and immediate
availability of Yojimbo 1.5. This new version adds support for
images as a first-class item type, improves built-in searching
performance and Spotlight accuracy, and includes bug fixes and
minor refinements based in no small measure on your feedback. :-)

Please take a few moments to read the change notes, available here:

<http://www.barebones.com/support/yojimbo/current_notes.shtml>

This upgrade is available free of charge to all registered
Yojimbo 1.x customers and can be downloaded from the Yojimbo
software updates page:

<http://www.barebones.com/support/yojimbo/updates.shtml>

Complete text of the press release is here:

<http://www.barebones.com/company/press.php?news_id=168>

The Yojimbo demo has also been updated; anyone not currently
using Yojimbo

is welcome to download and try it out:

<http://www.barebones.com/products/yojimbo/demo.shtml>

Yojimbo requires Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later, and is compatible
with Mac OS X 10.5. We strongly recommend use of the most
current system update available (10.4.11 or 10.5.1,
respectively). Yojimbo is a Universal application which runs
natively on both Intel- and PowerPC-based Macs.
