Note: LAN syncing with SyncTogether is not without its problems
either, but my impression is that it is more reliable than .Mac
 syncing.

It would be hard to be less reliable than .Mac in my experience.

I'm giving serious thought to manually merging the database once and
then just setting up an email-to-Yojimbo that will work on my iMac and
send stuff from the other computers to it.

Yes, I tried syncing a Palm for a long time and it never worked right.

The difference here is that the Yojimbo is freakin' huge. Trying to

Maybe 10.5.2 will do what that last dozen updates have failed to do

2007-12-20 Thread Andrew Janjigian
Well, I backed up the library, and tried this method, and it didn't
work. I was able to get my libraries to match up, but they would still
not sync. I added test items to each library to see if they would
populate to the others, and they did not.

I even just tried creating a new user on my laptop and syncing it to
dotmac. Presumably that would work just as if it was another machine
that had never had YJ installed, and there should be no conflicts or
issues. But still nothing was added to the empty library on syncing.

The odd thing about this is whenever I try to sync anew (whether by
resetting sync services or creating a new user), I get all kinds of
50% warnings and conflicting data dialogue boxes, even with new
libraries. I don't know how there can be conflicting data between an
empty library and the dotmac one, but there it is.

Still no word from BB. I sent sync logs to them two days ago, without response.

Re: Scrapping Synced libraries and starting over?

2007-12-20 Thread Johan™Strandberg
I too have had no end of sync problems since I upgraded to Yojimbo 1.5

I have tried resetting various sync options, etc. etc.. In my case
dotmacsyncclient and/or Yojimbo crashes every time a sync is
attempted, normally after a long time running and whilst consuming
considerable system resources making it near impossible to work on the
machine while it goes on. (And no, leaving it alone doesn't help. It
still crashes.) I have even tried to start it is SHIFT-held-down mode
to avoid interference from some random plugin or application, but no
joy.

I'm getting desperate. Do I have to roll back to pre-1.5 and lose data
entered since then? Would that even help, or is the .Mac sync registry
terminally munged by the repeated failures?

I turned off every synced application but Contacts to see if I could
get something that simple to work, but even it has problems now and
takes 35 to 45 minutes to attempt to sync some 50 contacts, so I
suspect the .Mac sync registry is permanently damaged, and I have no
clue as to how to reset it.

At this point I can no longer recommend Yojimbo (previously my
favorite application) and I strongly urge anybody who has not yet
upgraded to 1.5 to hold off upgrading until the problems have been
solved.

So far I have wasted 15+ hours trying to get this to work, and the
time Yojimbo has saved me over the month is rapidly being neutralized.
What is worse, I don't dare enter new data into the database since I
suspect I have to do a rollback unless this is resolved ASAP.

PS Yes, I have submitted crash logs and machine configurations to barebones.

I haven't upgraded to Leopard yet, so I'm quite sure this is all due

recent security patches pushed by apple to the 1.4.x users.

None of this makes me happy. [sigh]

I wish Barebones would issue some statement as to where things stand.
Currently the FAQ at

Please start by taking the following steps.
  1. Update to Mac OS X 10.4.9 (if you haven't
already) by downloading and installing the combo update.
  2. Make sure the latest version of Yojimbo
(currently 1.4.2) is installed on all your Macs.

so as we all can see, this hasn't been updated recently.

Although specific sync problems may still occur, we are not currently aware
of any general syncing issues related to either Yojimbo 1.5 *or* to Leopard.

If you've already contacted us, thanks and we appreciate your patience.

If you are having syncing trouble and have not contacted us, please do; we
can't help unless we're aware it's needed. :-)

Finally, please bear in mind that as always, the plural of anecdote is

Well. There is nothing anecdotal about what I have written above. I am
strictly writing about my personal first hand experiences. Frankly,
they suck enough as they are without knowing that others might have
similar experiences.

I will do what it takes to provide you with additional hard data, but

My observation was not directed at any particular individual situation,

Rather, I mean that as a reminder that although specific problems may do
arise from various sources, their existence does not automatically
imply there is a general issue.

Or, to put it more concretely, even if I got a flat tire this morning,
that doesn't mean everyone else driving in to work is likely to. :-)

Re: Scrapping Synced libraries and starting over?

2007-12-20 Thread Andrew Janjigian
I am glad (sorry to say) to hear that I am not the only one out there
with these issues.

I have had numerous sync problems since the 1.5 upgrade, as I said
earlier. I was however able to clear up the problems I was having with
all dotmac apps OTHER than Yojimbo by following the method described
here (for Leopard users):

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306484

This was the suggested solution to my YJ problems from BB Support, but
it did nothing at all in that case. I have applied it repeatedly
without effect.

For all other apps, I suggest disabling syncing for YJ and leaving it
be while you get the other apps syncing as desired.

This article MAY help with those using Tiger, though it is a lot less
straighforward:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306122

Perhaps I should add that my environment was somewhat different: two

With this setup, I do have to repeat a Sync command every now and then
to make the changes show up. My (unscientific) impression is that
SyncTogether is somewhat better at syncing Yojimbo items than .Mac is.
Unfortunately it doesn't work with Leopard and there is no update in
