Very interesting Milhouse481, thanks! I did not think Zappa would
have used a given vamp more than once in a single show.
The CD version of ZiNY shure is a strange thing anyway...
I wish I knew the exact order those songs were actually performed.

 Hello there,
I am referring of course to ZiNY (for both pieces).
Even before I had heard the CD, I had always thought the familiar
version of Lagoon sounded like it had an artificial edit in it, at
 those points.
There may well be an edit (the head and the solos may not be from
the same
performance), but the solos come from performances of Purple
Lagoon and not
Pound For A Brown (they do have the same vamp, though,
obviously.) Pound For
A Brown during the NYC '76 run of shows contained only an FZ
guitar solo
after the main theme, no other instrument solos.

The ZINY shows came from a 4-day run at the Palladium. This list shows the
song order for each performance.

The ones that are incirculation among traders etc, at least (not all of the shows are.)

Three of the four shows from the run circulate - the 27th, 28th and
a mystery show which most consider the 26th although it might be
the 29th. I'll call it the 26th.

On all three shows (and all other shows by the Jobson lineup), Pound
has an FZ solo over this vamp. (The one used on the CD is from the
26th.)

The tape from the 26th cuts into the outro of Purple Lagoon with an
instrumental version of the Any Kind Of Pain chorus inserted. The
rest of the piece is not on the tape.

The 27th has a long Purple Lagoon with free jazz solos, no vamp.
On the 28th, FZ mentions that they will try reusing the Pound vamp
for the Purple Lagoon solos. The Mike Brecker and Ruth Underwood
solos on the CD come from this show, and probably also Randy
Brecker's solo. The Cuber and O'Hearn solos are apparently from the
fourth, uncirculating show.
