Yes, it's just for speakers, and they'er self-powered. I asked
the seller for a cheap system that would be good enough to play music
DVDs. Check the link, I think the one I heard was the ESC 360

Anyway, a good stereo system will always be better than a cheap
5.1 sytem, but I thought this JBL system would perfectly make me happy
for the price.
Is that just for the speakers?
My experience was with my brother in law. He had a really nice stereo system with an abundance of power and two big loudspeakers that had 12 inch woofers soft dome midrange and hard dome tweeters. More bass than most folks want with no need for a sub woofer.
One day he decided he needed 5.1 surround sound. He got a complete system for about $375. It came with a three disc DVD/CD changer built into a 5.1 receiver and 6 cheap little speakers. I think the sub woofer has a 6 inch driver. It actually doesn't sound to bad as long as you don't try to turn it up to what I think of as normal listening volume. Forget about trying to play it loud. He was happy with it for a while until he started listening to music CD's on it that he was used to hearing on his old stereo.
The 5.1 system now makes a fine little bedroom system and his old stereo is back in the living room.

I guess a really good 5.1 system does beat a really good stereo system. There's a lot of cheap 5.1 systems out there though.
I checked a JBL 5.1 sytem recently, and I thought it was pretty good for the price (around 500$).
