Re: [Zappa-List] gmail accounts, etc. Tape to wav / Flac
Very good advice. I can only add that the widely excepted software for doing this is CDwav. There are numerous problems that other software can create and this one is specifically designed to avoid them. All the highest quality conversions are being done with CDWav and best of all it's free. Well you can pay for it but the software author said all it gets you is a clear conscience. Basically you can download and use it free and if at some time you feel like you want to pay him $15 he has something set up to take it. http://home.wanadoo.nl/mjmlooijmans/cdwave/description.html Jim L - Original Message - From: Barry Warren Polley To: Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, January 04, 2005 6:27 PM Subject: Re: [Zappa-List] gmail accounts, etc. well, i don't need a gmail account, but i found myself in a similarsituation, so here are my 2c below. On Tue, 4 Jan 2005, hoosac1877 wrote: It wasn't until about two months ago that I finally acquired the ability to burn CDs... and I have yet to do so. How would I goFortunately, even if you did a fabulous job collecting, the odds are thatwhat's already out in the digital realm is in most cases better than whatyou have on tape. So if you see a fabulous-looking show appear as a bittorrent, download it, and compare with what you already have. Not meaningany disrespect, but the odds are that most of your collection alreadyexists in the digital realm, and other people have done the grunt work. There are people who transfer by playing analog tapes directly into theirstandalone CD burners. I don't recommend that b/c you can't do any edits, and you have one shot to make it right. Further, you're going directly toaudio CD, which does introduce errors compared to pure digital. (Way fewerthan analog gens, but still, going digital allows flawless distribution.)So that means you'll probably use a computer and capture card about removing any annoying and/or distracting cuts and breaks in the recordings? What would be the most economical way to transfer 1,600+ hours of tape onto CDs? What kinds of hardware and software would be necessary to accomplish this? The task is actually to 'make digital' - you might choose DVD as an audiostorage medium instead. (I went with CD-R of audio files and backup DVD'sof the FLAC file image backups for storing and sharing.)There is a whole lot of info on capturing sound via computer, and I'm surepeople have sent you pointers to hardware. (My device works great but isobsolete and no longer available.) My tips here are:1) Clean your analog deck and keep it in good shape2) Don't use lossy formats on capture3) Sample at 44.1/16 so as to avoid the need for later resampling to getready for CD4) The weak link in the cheapest setup (hook up a tape deck to your analogsoundcard and record on the PC/Mac) is bound to be the audio inputconnector. You'll get lots of hum and noise - computers are veryelectrically noisy and most soundcards use really low quality shieldingand parts to keep costs down.Good luck!bFor further Z-related fun, please visit http://www.thebignote.com or http://www.killuglyradio.com , thank you. Re: [Zappa-List] gmail accounts, etc.
Hi! Please contact me off list. Thanks in advance. --Jerome - Original Message - From: hoosac1877 [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, January 04, 2005 5:27 PM Subject: [Zappa-List] gmail accounts, etc. Folks, Picking up on a previous posting, in a fit of New Year's generosity, I will shed my lurker's coat for a few moments to let y'all know that I have five gmail accounts to share to the first five who respond to me off-list - but read on first; there's a bit of a catch. To make this posting at least someone relevant to this group's overall thrust and mission, here's my dilemma: In the 1990s, I was actively involved in *non-profit* trading of tapes of FZ concerts; between 1991 and 1997, I amassed approximately 1,600 hours' worth of FZ on tape, before I eventually burned out on the whole thing. About 900 of these tapes are properly labeled and have even been listened to, but I have stacks of tapes collecting dust; since becoming someone's father, I have simply not had the time to indulge in many of my past loves and hobbies. In any event, also contributing to the stagnation of my collecting was that as new technologies emerged, I was a bit slow on the uptake. As more and more folks began to talk about, and become increasingly proficient at, trading CD-Rs and downloading mp3- and shn-files, I fell farther and farther behind, not knowing what most of these things are, let alone what they do and/or what's required to make them work properly. It wasn't until about two months ago that I finally acquired the ability to burn CDs... and I have yet to do so. Thus, here's my question: what would be the best way to transfer all these Maxell and TDK tapes to CDs? By best, I mean in what manner would I be able to best preserve the integrity of the original recording? How would I go about removing any annoying and/or distracting cuts and breaks in the recordings? What would be the most economical way to transfer 1,600+ hours of tape onto CDs? What kinds of hardware and software would be necessary to accomplish this? Your expertise and willingness to share and educate a novice would be most appreciated. As I said above, I have five gmail accounts with 1000 MBs of storage to disseminate, and would be very happy to dole these out in exchange for your help. Please contact me off-list. Many thanks and in the hope that peace will be restored before long, I wish each and every one of you happy new year. Re: [Zappa-List] gmail accounts, etc.
Damn, that sounds like a _LOT_ of material.. =) I can't help you much with the sound transfer things, but I hope they get out someday, for people to hear, and all.. I guess it would be fair to assume that you have a lot in stock, that people generally haven't heard? Are there any unreleased treats on some of them too, or is it mostly live rips? Whatever you do, don't incinerate those tapes.. =) For further Z-related fun, please visit http://www.thebignote.com or http://www.killuglyradio.com , thank you. Yahoo!
