I've seen very similar behavour out of my former device.
At first (when I unpakced and plugged it for the first
time) it were initialized and worked.  But after a re-plug
it stopped working with lots of -110 errors (which is USB
timeout) while loading various pieces of firmware, like on
the above example.  Since that I were never able to run it
again, not even on windows, not on any of our machines.
So I returned it back to the store, where the techie tried
to verify my claims by attempting to install it into their
windows machine - with similar effects, it stopped when
trying to initialize (their windows drivers does not have
any timeouts apparently so it just sits here with hourglass
mouse cursor until reset).  A replacememnt I bought works
just fine for more than 2 years.

I'm not saying that you have broken piece of hardware, I'm
merely expressing my own expirence :)
