If you talk about the origin: Laozi for Taoism, and Sakyamuni for Buddhism 
where chan/zen originated, they are as old as each other. If you like an even 
older thing, it is Hinduism. I am responsible for my own answer. If I make a 
mistake, I apologize. It is nothing to do with JMJM.
