GoM to consider logistics of enumerating caste

TNN, Jul 1, 2010, 01.41am IST

NEW DELHI: The group of ministers set up to examine enumerating caste
is expected to consider logistics and modalities of such an operation
that was last conducted in 1932. The GoM will consider the process of
enumeration as part of the ongoing national headcount.

A caste census is clearly a done deal and the GoM is expected to now
prepare a detailed proposal on its implementation. The census exercise
will be confined to collection of responses from people and not deal
with verification of claims. That may have to be dealt with at a later
stage.

The proposal will look at how the census form is to be altered for
caste related entries and whether this should be limited to just an
open question on the what-is-your-caste lines. The panel will also
have to decide at what stage in the census process should caste be
enumerated.

This could be done at the biometric stage where the data will also be
used to build the national population register linked to the unique
identity number project.
