Describing Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar as a ''public intellectual and a trained economist'', Urban Development and Culture Minister S. Jaipal Reddy today said the architect of the Indian constitution had a scientific approach to the problems facing the society during his time.
Mr Reddy made this observation while releasing the book, ''Dr Ambedkar Bharatiya Arthik Shilpakar'' in the Parliament House.
Dr Ambedkar believed in the progress of the country through economic planning. More than that, he was an emperical philosopher, who embraced Buddhism to uplift the humble and underprivileged class of the society.
Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal also spoke on the occasion.
Mr P.Abraham, IAS (retd.), the author of the book and former Secretary, Ministry of Power, said Dr. Ambedkar argued that Industrialisation of India was the best remedy for the agricultural problems of the country and also insisted on uniformity in labour legislation, establishment of Employment Exchanges and Tripartite Labour Tribunal. During his tenure as member of the Viceroy's Executive Council in 1942-46, he created for the first time a department of power at the national level. ''The present Central Electricity Authority owes its existence to Dr. Ambedkar,' he said.
The book release function was attended by several MPs, including Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Panabaka Lakshmi, former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Janardhan Reddy, Mr Venkataswamy, Mr Erran Naidu, Mr J.D. Seelam, Mr Harsha Kumar, Ms Vanga Geeta, Mr K.S.Rao, Mr R.S. Rao and Mr Pallam Raju.
