SOUTHERN NEWS - KARNATAKA Oct 24, 2007 Dalita Vedike changes name Wednesday October 24 2007 12:31 IST Express News Service BHADRAVATI: Dalita Sanghatanegala Jagruta Vedike has resolved to change the name of the forum as 'Dalita Sanghatanegala Okkuta' in a meeting held recently. The office bearers and the executive committee members will continue in their respective places in this federation of the organizations of Dalits. The Okkuta also resolved to urge the social welfare department to name the two hostels being constructed after Ramabai(wife of Dr B R Ambedkar) and Prof B Krishnappa, who had paved the way for Dalits' struggle in Karnataka. December 6 will be celebrated as 'Parinirvana Divas' of Dr B R Ambedkar and to commemorate this occasion Buddhist monks will be invited to Bhadravati. An exclusive function will be held to throw open the doors of Buddhism to the people in Bhadravati. And, above all, Ambedkar statue erected at Ambedkar circle near bus stand, will be re-sanitized in view of former deputy chief minister B S Yediyurappa, who was a strong follower of Manu culture, unveiling this statue earlier in a function held under the auspices of city municipality, Okkuta said. A membership extension campaign would also be held to further strengthen the forum. President of 'Federation of Dalit Organizations' Shivabasapa presided the meeting. General secretary Suresh welcomed. Hon president M Srinivasan, vice-president T M Manjunath, secretary B Ramesh, treasurer Gangana Naik Gondi and others were present.
