Success!
Using the MacZFS Wiki, I did a manual uninstall of the components, 
rebooted, installed the new software, and rebooted again.

A *sudo zpool import -f (array names)* later, and there they were.

My most sincere thanks to all who have contributed!

It is best practice. However. Just properly uninstall your current ZFS. Then 
install new ZFS and try an import. If necessary add the -f for force import and 
you should be fine.

OK. In the readme-file for the installer, it tells me that I *must* *sudo 
zpool export* my arrays before upgrading, but I can't; any zpool call is 
answered with
