Functional Title: *Web Server Administrator*

Position Description: Job Description: Systems administration and
engineering for *Red Hat Linux and Solaris server environments*
Detail: Working alongside a talented team, you will architect, build, and
support Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Solaris servers, as well as support and
document infrastructure for various data center migration projects. You will
support mission-critical web applications for businesses within McGraw-Hill
Education. Using your years of production experience and excellent
communication skills, you will coordinate with your counterparts in our
Operations, Database Administration, Storage, and Networking organizations.
*A qualified candidate: *
*o has at least 8 years experience administering UNIX in production
environments, ideally 3 years or more on Red Hat Linux and Solaris*
*o has extensive experience administering EMC SAN Storage and Veritas
Cluster File Systems*
*o has Solaris 10 zones and VMWare experience*
*o has recent experience in performance tuning and analysis*
*o has excellent communication skills and produces clear documentation*
*o can troubleshoot problems quickly and creatively*
*o can work on simultaneous projects in a rapidly-changing environment*
*Essential Duties and Responsibilities: *
*o As part of a team, support approximately 450 Linux and Solaris servers*
*o Architect, build, configure and support hardware, operating system, and
applications *
*o Write clear documentation and create diagrams*
*o Automate recurring tasks*
*o Help develop policies and best practices*
*o Respond to after-hours emergencies*
*o Respond to needs and questions of end-users concerning their access of
systems resources*
*o Interact with and coordinate activities of cross-functional teams,
including Development, Systems Administration, Database Administration,
Network Engineering, Production Support, and Operations staff*
*o Proactively identify gaps and look to improve overall system availability
*
*Required technologies used in this position:*
*o UNIX command line*
*o Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3/4/5*
*o Solaris 8/9/10*
*o Veritas Volume Manager, Storage Foundation, Cluster File System, Cluster
Server*
*o EMC SAN*
*o Apache web server 2.x*
*o One or more: BEA Web Logic Application Server 9.x, 10.x, Apache Tomcat,
Red Hat JBoss*
*o UNIX shell scripting*
*Qualifications:*
*Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and/or related field or equivalent
experience*
Technical Requirements:
o Must be able to work 95% of the time on the UNIX / Linux command line
o Working knowledge of the following Protocols and Standards: HTTP, SSL,
CGI, JSP, NFS, LDAP, NIS
o Significant experience supporting the technical components used in
enterprise Internet applications
o Strong problem-solving and analysis skills
o Ability to analyze a problem at a system level and determine the root
cause at a technical (detailed) level
o Ability to learn and apply new technologies quickly to solve technical
problems
o Ability to interact with non-technical colleagues and communicate issues
in layman's terms
o Ability to document procedures and create server diagrams for use by other
engineers
