Thanks for these ideas but I was thinking of something more integrated with Zim, the main reason being I want to be able to create the expanded text within Zim with all it's formatting, inclusion of images, etc.. I don't know whether this is practical, but I suggest the following : The

Is there a plugin that allows me to insert standard text into a page. There a number of words, phrases and blocks of text that I use frequently and I wish to be able to input them with a few keystrokes. If you want an idea of what I mean, I wish to have something similar to the Snippets

I am using Ubuntu 13.10. I downloaded Autokey but just straight-off I can't get it to work. I am going to have to spend some time looking at the Help and understanding how it works. I was thinking that the expansions need to be built using Zim so that formatting, links, etc can be a part of
