Re: [Zim-wiki] What to do with launchpad bug list?

2023-09-05 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Sorry, but I would not invest in going to through the old tracker. I still
get notified and it is really never used anymore, so 99% of issues will be
out of date.

Next step will be just closing down launchpad project and also replace the
mailing list with GitHub forum for discussion and annouchments.

Jaap

Re: [Zim-wiki] Using Zim as document editor

2023-01-05 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
P.S. Just noticed that pandoc only converts _to_ zim, so on the way back,
you need to use something like export _from_ zim to markdown and then
potentially pandoc to convert from markdown to other formats

... sounds like there is a good plugin proposal here to directly use pandoc
on import / export of data

Re: [Zim-wiki] Using Zim as document editor

2023-01-05 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Hallo Johan,

Jij ook de de beste wensen voor het nieuwe jaar !

The workflow basically relies on "covert xyz --> zim, edit zim, convert zim
--> xyz". Obviously, the bottleneck is the accuracy of the converter to
reproduce the original content as close as possible and reflect the edits
properly.

Probably the best tool to try would be pandoc ( https://pandoc.org/ ) which
does support zim format among many text based formats.

 Hope this works for you,

Jaap

[Zim-wiki] Zim 0.75 released !

2022-10-01 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Dear all,

Zim release 0.75 is now available. It took quite a bit longer than I had
expected (as usual, so much for estimations...).

Highlights are the reworked interface for the tasklist plugin and updates
to a number of other plugins (see the log below).

Less noticeable, but a big chunk of work was the refactoring of internal
APIs for filesystem access and parsetree handling. These should result in
better stability and easier maintenance going forward.

Please help updating the translations here:
https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/zim/develop/ (notice we are now
translating on the "develop" branch) and I'll release a 0.75.1 version in a
month or so with all translation updates.

Regards,

Jaap

* Upgrade Python version requirement to >= 3.6
* Complete porting all modules to `zim.newfs` and deprecate `zim.fs`

* Update LinkMap with new options
* Refactor preference for custom window decoration & toolbar plugin

Re: [Zim-wiki] Imported a lot of files, now indexing is taking forever

2022-03-20 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Hi Jon,

Based on my benchmarks [1] this should run within minutes. But not sure
what version of zim you are using and what platform, if it is an older
version, the benchmark might not be valid.

To troubleshoot best way is to run "zim -V --index path/to/notebook" from a
terminal, it will give some insight in what is going on and hopefully show
some errors that give a hint to what is wrong.

Hope this helps,

Jaap

Re: [Zim-wiki] Modifying Latex output

2022-03-04 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
You can modify it yourself by patching the code - not by configuration or
template - if you do make the change, please file a PR for this so we can
incorporate it.

You can also choose to file a change request via GitHub issue tracker.
Please include very clearly the wiki input and the desired latex output.
This is because I'm maintaining the latex export, but really never use it
myself anymore and I have little hand on experience with latex packages. So
I need to trust input from latex users what to change and how exactly :)

Thanks!

P.S. there are a few open issues that are pending input/help from
experienced latex users: Issues · zim-desktop-wiki/zim-desktop-wiki

Re: [Zim-wiki] Old tasklist interface (Was: RFC: New Tasklist User Interface)

2022-02-08 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Hi Joseph,

The tasklist only tracks open checkboxes, any other ([x], [*], [<] and [>])
are considered closed one way or the other with no meaning attached as far
as the tasklist is concerned.

Yes, you can have a closed task with open children. The children will show
up and inherit tags. An alternative is to start the list with a label, like
"TODO: @edu" followed by one or more tasks. That way the whole list
inherits that tag. There is an example of this in the manual.

[Zim-wiki] RFC: New Tasklist User Interface

2022-01-13 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Dear all,

In the zim development branch we are testing a new user interface for the
tasklist. I would like to get feedback from users trying it out before
merging it in the main branch and releasing it. Please try it out and let
me know your thoughts how to improve further.

Key changes:
- New interface for selecting "lists" "tags" and "pages"
- Optional "GTD" flavor lists in the selection pane for "next" / "inbox" /
"waiting"
- New menu in the dialog to allow also including closed tasks in the
overview
- Improved parsing of task labels
- Allow inheritance of all modifiers (tags, due date, start date etc.) from
a label starting a list of tasks
- Tasks appearing in a weekly journal page can have automatic due or start
date per day instead of per week

For more explanation, please see the manual page
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/zim-desktop-wiki/zim-desktop-wiki/develop/data/manual/Plugins/Task_List.txt
(sorry for the raw formatting)

Development branch source:
https://github.com/zim-desktop-wiki/zim-desktop-wiki/tree/develop
Development branch PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~jaap.karssenberg/+archive/ubuntu/zim-snapshots

Unfortunately there is no development branch windows installer or Mac OS
application at this time

To see the screenshot and provide feedback, please go to the discussion
tread here:
https://github.com/zim-desktop-wiki/zim-desktop-wiki/discussions/1863

Kind regards,

Re: [Zim-wiki] How to increase font size, especially task plugin

2021-12-03 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
No easy way at the moment to only adress the side pane in CSS. However e.g.
the tasklist uses a treeview, so you could modify the text size for the
treeview class only; will also affect the page index and other instances of
a treeview, but not the textview showing the page.

>From the Gtk reference: GtkTreeView has a main CSS node with name treeview
and style class .view

Please file a ticket for this and I will add some widget names to make this
easier.

quiet have a look over there ;)

Hi Manfred,

Do you happen to know what version(s) of libgtksourceview you have

Thanks,

Re: [Zim-wiki] Zim version 0.74.0 released !

2021-09-16 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Joseph,

* For the window chrome see ticket #1582 for discussion how an alternative
could look. Although I must say, the script looks like a hack - not sure
what inputs you are trying to send, but there might be better ways to
control zim from a script :)
* I got multiple requests to have an option to hide the edit bar
altogether, so will look into that. (Ticket to be created.)

No. Html does not (really) allow for embedding the images into the html,
they are typically exported as separate files. Maybe you can use the MHTML
(Web archive) export format ? It is not as widely supported, but it does
allow creating a single file.

Fixed in commit 010fd9 on the development branch.

Staying as close as possible to the GFM spec, if anything because it
specifies how to deal with brackets and corner cases. Also wanting to be
future compatible with MarkDown - it is still on my list :)

Re: [Zim-wiki] Making indexing optional ?

2021-06-26 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Hi Mario,

Just pushed a fix (29bdea) that improves how we check whether files are a
zim page or not. Now max 50 characters are being read at the start of the
file when indexing. If your large files are not "line based" (thus
resulting in a very long read when trying to read the first line) this
should fix the issue.

Regards,

Jaap

than the page name. Could you file a request in the issue tracker on GitHub?

Thanks,

Re: [Zim-wiki] URLs without domain do not get auto-hyperlinked

2021-05-05 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
I think a fix could be implemented by making paste of a URL a special case.
What is happening here is that the URL is probably pasted as text (you can
check debug output to make sure) and therefore parsed using the wiki
syntax. If the URL were pasted as an URL data type it would always be
formatted as a link. Therefore we could make the copy-paste code use a more
lax URL regex and if pasted text looks like an URL, apply the same logic as
for the URL data type.

Would not like to make the wiki syntax more lax, and it doesn't need to be
if the copy-paste logic properly understands the content as a link.

Jaap

Re: [Zim-wiki] Making indexing optional ?

2021-04-23 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Yes that explains, those large files will have a big impact on the indexer.

You are referring to this issue: Make indexer ignore text files that are
not zim pages · Issue #907 · zim-desktop-wiki/zim-desktop-wiki (github.com)
<https://github.com/zim-desktop-wiki/zim-desktop-wiki/issues/907> which is
fixed in the development branch and will be in the next release.

With that fix the indexer will read the first line of each file to decide
whether it is a zim file or not, and if not it will not try to access the
contents.

Would be great if you have a chance to test the development branch and see
whether it works in practice for your case !

Yes, this is intentional. Followed the Github Flavored Markdown spec on how
to match valid URLs. Want to avoid too lax matching. You can still turn

Re: [Zim-wiki] When did the tear-off menus disappear?

2021-03-30 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Not sure when I removed the "tear off", but it is quite a while back. In
the development branch the whole statusbar is gone now, so need to find
another place for this feature. Probably the "backlink side bar" plugin
should have a "pop-out" button.

However there is "Search" -> "Search Backlinks..." in the menu, which will
show a search window with the backlink list, this allows navigating them
one by one. Admit it is an extra click to get there, but it does what you
want, and allows refining with additional search terms.

Hope this helps,

Jaap

Re: [Zim-wiki] links in index

2021-01-06 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Issue with "www." links is fixed in
commit 515c62d04db10ca377324aad13fcf5aa8df9c891, will go in next release.

Thinking it through there is a bigger concern: pasting as text and then
reloading can give unexpected results when the text contains wiki markup.
Therefore I changed the default parsing of pasted text to wiki format.
Pasting a link with wiki formatting as in the example of Raphael is fixed.
(If you start typing "[[" and then paste the URI it still fails - in this
case it is better to just hit ^L and paste the URI in the dialog.)

To still allow pasting plain text or e.g. code examples I added a "paste as
verbatim" option in the context menu. To make things smooth paste will
automatically do "paste as verbatim" when pasting in a verbatim text region.

These changes are in commit b7ea7b3d6ce572eb558b22a6dc0f4cef723da52f

Jaap

[Zim-wiki] Zim project update & donations

2020-12-29 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Dear all,

In this mail I would like to share a project update and an update on
donations for the Zim project.

As those who are using the development snapshots will be aware, there is
quite some work lined up already for a new release. Key features will be UI
changes towards a more modern "Gnome 3" look (for better or worse - tastes
differ), the ability to edit pages in separate windows, and a fix for not
indexing text file attachments as pages (which is long overdue). In the
mean time I try to do reasonable frequent "point releases" of the main
branch to fix critical bugs. I expect at least one more point release
before I can release the features waiting in the development branch. Last
few months I had good progress, but unfortunately the Netherlands is in
lockdown again due to COVID-19 over the Christmas holiday, so the coming
weeks or longer I will be juggling family and work and expect little time
left for Zim. But I will manage to do at least critical bug fixes. As a
long term plan I now use a list of things I would want to see in a "1.0
release" for Zim. The list is available in the GitHub wiki here
<https://github.com/zim-desktop-wiki/zim-desktop-wiki/wiki/Planning>.

I've also been thinking what to do with the donations that come in. First
of all I would like to stress I really appreciate all the donations that
come in - I always experience them as a token of gratitude and a direct
message that people out there are actually using my application. They also
make me feel responsible: first of all to make sure Zim is worthy of those
donations, but secondly also in putting the money to good use. At the
moment they amount between 500 - 1000 euros per year. Since this is not
enough to hire commercial help, I myself do any work on Zim for free, and
expenses are limited to webhosting, I don't have a real good use for this
money at the moment. Therefore as of this year I will donate any donations
beyond a small buffer to the International Red Cross (via the dutch
national branch). I'm convinced they will be able to put it to good use and
are sufficiently politically neutral. I also believe this will give me
personally a better incentive to keep working on Zim, knowing it
contributes not only to good open software but also in a small way to more
pressing needs.

I hope all of you are safe out there and wish you all the best for 2021!

Kind regards,

Jaap Karssenberg

Well, Zim never just deletes a file. So content much be there. Have you
looked in the actual notebook folder of the notebook you are using? The
screenshot shows the installation folder of the application

Re: [Zim-wiki] Zim issue

2020-12-18 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Hi Rachid,

Maybe you could be a bit more specific on what you are missing. In general
Zim stores notes as text files in the folder where you created the
notebook. So you should be able to locate them in your file browser. You
can always add the folder again as a "new" notebook in zim.

Re: [Zim-wiki] links in index

2020-12-15 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Found it - this is a regression when I made the URL parser more Markdown /
GitHub compliant (recognizing closing parenthesis etc.) based on
https://github.github.com/gfm/#autolinks-extension-

The parser now recognizes links starting with "www." as a special case
without the "http://; in front. However in a later parsing step these are
misqualified as page links.

This can be fixed two ways (1) step recognizing "www." links unless they
start with "http://; or (2) make sure these links are properly recognized
as URL links instead of page links. For future compatibility with Markdown
I prefer solution (2).

Any thoughts ?

Re: [Zim-wiki] links in index

2020-12-14 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Actually this is the intended behavior. If you create a link to a new page
it will show up as a placeholder in the index

If you intend to create a link to an URL instead, the link should start
with an URL scheme, e.g. "http://; so it will be recognized as an URL and
not a page name.

Jaap

Launchpad messed up the github repository import and seems beyond repair -
it blocks because the repository name is known already and everytime
redirects to the broken import. Probably the only way to "unblock" the flow
there would be to register a new project under a new name. Weblate was
suggested on this list as a good alternative, so let's give it a try.

[Zim-wiki] Translations move to weblate.org

2020-09-22 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Dear all,

Finally got zim setup on weblate.org for translations.

Translators, please try contributing your translations via:

https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/zim/master/
or
https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/zim/develop/

The first one (ending in "master") contains translation strings for the
current / upcoming releases. The second one (ending in "develop") could
contain strings for new features.

Hope this new setup works,

Re: [Zim-wiki] Selecting GTK theme in Windows installation of Zim?

2020-08-12 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
I had success with switching zim to dark theme by creating
"etc/gtk-3.0/settings.ini" in the installation folder and put

[Settings]
gtk-application-prefer-dark-theme=1

in that file. No custom theme at hand to test, but there you can set the
theme name. That reduces the problem to putting the theme in hte right
folder :)

Re: [Zim-wiki] Selecting GTK theme in Windows installation of Zim?

2020-08-11 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
The Gtk manual gives the following information:

There is a setting called gtk-theme-name that is read from the
"settings.ini" file

On settings file:

In the absence of an Xsettings manager, GTK+ reads default values for
settings from settings.ini files in /etc/gtk-3.0, $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS/gtk-3.0
and $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/gtk-3.0. These files must be valid key files (see
GKeyFile), and have a section called Settings. Themes can also provide
default values for settings by installing a settings.ini file next to their
gtk.css file.

On theme lookup:

First, the file $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/gtk-3.0/gtk.css is loaded if it exists.
Then, GTK+ loads the first existing file among
XDG_DATA_HOME/themes/THEME/gtk-VERSION/gtk.css,
$HOME/.themes/THEME/gtk-VERSION/gtk.css,
$XDG_DATA_DIRS/themes/THEME/gtk-VERSION/gtk.css and
DATADIR/share/themes/THEME/gtk-VERSION/gtk.css, where THEME is the name of
the current theme (see the “gtk-theme-name”

setting), DATADIR is the prefix configured when GTK+ was compiled (unless
overridden by the GTK_DATA_PREFIX environment variable), and VERSION is the
GTK+ version number. If no file is found for the current version, GTK+
tries older versions all the way back to 3.0.

For the zim on windows, XDG_CONFIG_HOME is set to %APPDATA% /zim/config

So my best guess without testing is that if you create
"%APPDATA%/zim/config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini" and set the theme name, it
should be used by Gtk. To find %APPDATA% just type "%APPDATA%" in the
navigation bar of windows file explorer.

Let me know whether this works. I'll put the information in the manual and
maybe just make a preference setting for this.

Regards,

Jaap

Have to look into this - quick glance at the code suggests "meta" always
exists and gets initialized as an empty dict even when no content. So
something goes wrong in wrapping it for access from the template.

Yes the template syntax should support the python "get" function. There is
a list of supported methods here:

Quick update on translations: unfortunately the template import on
launchpad is broken, and no clue how to fix it - seems that this function
does not play well with a branch imported from git :(

Probably it is time to go to a new workflow for translations and cut the
last tie with launchpad project management. Just not sure yet where to go.

Re: [Zim-wiki] Some praise and a TOC question

2020-05-04 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Maybe I don't fully understand your use case, but why not use a separate
page for each slide? You can show full screen with the pageindex along the
side - at least in zim > 0.70 .

If that doesn't work. Instead of changing the behavior of the ToC you
probably just want a new plugin that looks like the distraction free mode
but has some presenting controls.

[Zim-wiki] Update on communication & Zim project work

2019-12-17 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Dear all,

For those that are trying to communicate with me about the Zim project: I
might not be able to get back to you right away, in fact many bug reports
sit idle for months before I'm able to look at them and respond. This is
not because I don't care, but because my time is very limited. I have a
full time job that does not allow me working on Zim during office hours and
I have young kids to take care of outside of office hours. This forces me
to prioritize what time I spent on Zim. Typically I ignore all incoming
reports while I'm working on new features and then after a few months I go
through the bulk that has built up in one go. So let me apologize up front
if your email or bug report goes unanswered for a long time - it's the
best I can do for now.

Please realize this project is a volunteer driven effort. Although there
are many contributors, in the end the project relies on my personal
availability to do integration of features and general support. My free
time is limited, and in the current situation this dictates the pace. To
get things moving and be more responsive it would be great to get help with
things like:

   - Bug assessment and triage: I believe a significant part of new bug
reports are either duplicates or help requests. These could quickly be
answered by experienced users who have a bit of overview over the issue
list. Reducing the inflow will help to identify the real urgent issues and
   respond to those.
   - Simple, clean cut merge requests for accepted bugs & test suite
improvements: There are a number of issues in the list tagged as "good
first issue" that are potential candidates. If the fix is local in the code
and covered by a test, I can pull the merge request without additional work
   on my side.
   - Creating a new window installer: This has been supported for many
years by a volunteer who decided to step down as of Zim 0.70. Therefore the
windows installer is no longer updated and this brings another task to my
desk - unless anyone else picks it up.

If you would like to help on any of the above items and take over some of
the project work, feel free to contact me directly and I will help to get
you started.

I would also like to mention a couple of things that -- although very much
appreciated -- do not necessarily help to move faster:

   - Monetary donations: Since I'm fulltime employed otherwise, donations
do not help me to free up more time. In the past I have tried using
donations to put "bounties" on wanted features, but this failed to attract
   any substantial submissions.
   - Hacking away on big new features: Typically big new features require
big changes in the framework to be integrated and require a lot of changes
in test cases to verify that nothing else breaks. Unless you are willing to
take this along and make sure to align on the framework architecture
changes upfront, the merge request will likely be pending for a long time,
waiting for me to review, rework and integrate it.

Kind regards,

Jaap

Please see previous discussion here: there is a vacancy for a volunteer to
pick up compiling the windows installer. Until someone picks that up it
will be source releases only. But you can install those using msys, see the
readme file for details.

Re: [Zim-wiki] Drag & Drop pages not working in v.70, .71

2019-07-23 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Yes, I recognize the usefulness of the issue list is severely limited by
the amount of new unclassified reports in the first few pages.

Let me use the opportunity to re-iterate my request to the whole list:
please volunteer in culling the issue list to keep things going. Myself I'm
just to busy to actually address issues and new features to keep up with
the inflow. So out of necessity the process now is to let things run for a
while and then do the culling in one which bulk once each 6 months or so.

Re: [Zim-wiki] Interaction between Journal and Page Index plugins

2019-06-26 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
No, I don't plan to go back to the old layout. For various reasons I want
to separate these plugins in their own widgets.

What is not optimal now is that when you open a journal page, both indexes
go select the page and thus unfold the hierarchy for the journal. One
optimization I would like to make is that when opening a page it is
selected in either the journal pane or the index pane, but not both. That
way the journal hierarchy in the index remains folded.

Hiding the journal hierarchy completely is a no go. One reason is that is
would be ugly to implement. The more important reason is that I believe the
index should show the whole notebook, including special pages, because
hidden content can be confusing.

Jaap

[Zim-wiki] Zim translations

2019-05-17 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Dear all,

Turns out something was wrong in the syncing of the translation template
with Launchpad. Fixed it and now the template is up to date again.

Fully translated languages show ~ 7 untranslated messages, so minor delta.

Probably this is due to a change in locale settings. Latest version added
checks for this. To fix it in place a full re-index using "zim --index"
should help.

[Zim-wiki] Zim 0.71.0 released

2019-04-26 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Dear all,

Yesterday evening I released zim 0.71.0 . This is a bug fix release with
quite a few (critical) fixes. I hope this release will help to make the
Gtk3 port more stable and useful for more users. Changelog is below, see
git log for 25+ detailed fixes.

Overall the 0.70 release was more painful than I hoped. Several of the
issues are Gtk upstream issues that are not found in my own testing. These
could only be found by exposing more users to this version. I'm sorry were
this caused issues for users unaware of the update but I'm afraid that
means that the exposure of the previous release candidate versions was not
widespread enough.

As the additional digit indicates, I plan to make patch releases in a
0.71.x series if more significant issues arise with this port. In the
meantime there is a "develop" branch in GitHub which will serve to merge
patches towards a 0.72 release. Soonish I will switch the "snapshot" PPA to
pull from this develop branch.

Also you may have noticed that we now have travis continuous testing
running on the GitHub repository. That should make it faster to merge pull
requests as the website will show already the test status.

Thank you for your patience and all the bug reports.

Regards,

Jaap

## 0.71.0 - Thu 25 Apr 2019

Re: [Zim-wiki] Translation of User Manual into Russian

2019-04-25 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Hi George,

No, currently there is only an English manual. I'm open to packaging
translations if they are somewhat complete.

I think the default way of working would be to clone the repository in
GitHub and start adding your translation next to the current manual. That
way you can request merging your work when you are ready. Also it allows
tracking changes to the English manual in your clone, so you can update the
translations where needed.

On my side I would need to do something to ensure the right translated
manual is opened when a user clicks the help menu.

We should also look into packaging such that images are not duplicated
between the translations, but that can be done later.

Regards,

Jaap

[Zim-wiki] Zim 0.70 released

2019-03-28 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Dear all,

After 3 release candidates I now released zim 0.70. This is the stable
release of the port to Gtk3 and python3.

A big thanks to all those who helped improving this release in the past
months with bug reports, patches and translations.

Kind regards,

Jaap

Re: [Zim-wiki] Cleaning up my config directory

2019-03-26 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Yes, exactly. You just fork the whole config directory by switching the
environment parameter.

I understand it is not so convenient in your case, so feel free to open a
ticket asking to restore the style per notebook feature. Also allows people
to click the "+1" icon and get a feeling how many other users depend on
this feature.

Background is that refactoring of the code the config folder is now a
global object which is not switched per notebook, so switching profiles did
not fit anymore in the architecture. To restore style per notebook a new
implementation would be needed compared to how profiles were implemented.

Re: [Zim-wiki] Cleaning up my config directory

2019-03-26 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
We could bring back a feature like style per notebook via notebook
properties. But not planned for now.

What always works is running Zim with different environment parameter for
xdg_config_home to load a different config.

Re: [Zim-wiki] Zim from windows to Ubuntu

2019-02-25 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Hi Francois,

Somehow the index file is corrupted. In this case indeed removing the
".zim" folder or just the ".zim/index.db" file should work.

If it doesn't work, have a look in "~/.cache/zim" - likely you find the
relevant "index.db" in there.

After removing it, you should be able to start and re-index the notebook.

If indexing gives problems, try to run it from a terminal with "zim --index
notebook --debug" and report the error messages in the bug tracker at
GitHub.

Regards,

Jaap

[Zim-wiki] zim releases 0.70-rc3 and 0.69.1

2019-02-19 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Dear all,

Yesterday evening I uploaded 2 releases: 0.70-rc3 and 0.69.1

Release 0.70-rc3 is the third release candidate for the 0.70 Gtk3 based
release. There quite a few small fixes compared to rc2 but also one
critical fix for updating links on move page or rename page. I previous
versions the update went wrong for floating links from the moved page(s)
that were anchored at a higher level. Fixed it and increased test coverage
to not let it slip back in.

Sine the same critical issue is also present in the Gtk2 based 0.69
release, I backported the fix and released as 0.69.1. I've added another
point number to the version to not conflict with the 0.70 Gtk3 version.

I would urge everyone to start using the 0.70 release candidate instead of
the 0.69.1 version, but if you are stuck with Gtk2 you should upgrade from
0.69 to 0.69.1.

Unless new (critical) issues are found I plan to make 0.70 final in another
2 to 3 weeks and complete the change to Gtk3 as the new stable release.

Jaap

Re: [Zim-wiki] Selection settings

2019-02-07 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Probably this is Gtk default behavior, as it is not implemented in zim.

Testing with master branch I actually do not observe the same behavior. So
it may also be Gtk version and locale setting dependent.

If you want to control this behavior explicitly, you would need to define a
plugin that captures the double click and does the selection in the
preferred way.

Jaap

Just uploaded the 2nd release candidate for zim 0.70. FIxed 20 to 25 issues
since RC 1. Thanks for all the reports and testing !

Also included translation updates. Will sync again with the final release,
so if you still want to update translation please do it in the next ~ 2

[Zim-wiki] Zim 0.70 RC1 released

2019-01-15 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Dear all,

Yesterday I released zim 0.70-rc1. This is the first release candidate for
the 0.70 release, which will be the first zim release based on Gtk3 &
python3. Snapshot PPA should also be updated shortly - if the build system
doesn't fail again - fingers crossed.

Please help by installing and testing this candidate, because I expect due
to the large changes, there will be more issues lurking than normal :/ The
length of the changelog

does not do justice to the amount of code that has changed.

The translation template has been updated, so also please help updating
translations: https://translations.launchpad.net/zim

Those monitoring github may also have noticed that I transferred the
repository to an "organisation". This allows me to also assign others to do
bug triage or merge patches. The new URL is:
https://github.com/zim-desktop-wiki/zim-desktop-wiki.

Have fun!

2018-12-20 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Joseph,

I don't recognize the issues with the side pane you mention, might be MacOS
specific. Please use the github issue tracker to report them instead of the
mailing list.

The gtkrc is indeed no longer used in gtk3 - instead you should modify
either " ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css" or " ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini". The
good news is that the theming is now using css syntax, which is better
documented and more familiar to many users than the gtkrc format was.

For the overall font I see there is a "gtk-font-name" in the settings, but
not sure whether that is overruled in your default theme. If so, the
gtk.css can be used to modify the theme.

Regards,

Jaap

[Zim-wiki] Zim release 0.69 and plan for 0.70

2018-12-16 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Dear all,

Today I merged the ongoing work on Python3 / Gtk3 into the "master" branch.
I realized this is necessary to make it visible where bug reports and merge
requests based on the Python2 / Gtk2 branch conflict with the ongoing work.
I branched off the latest Python2 / Gtk2 commit in a separate branch.

Before I did this I made a final Python2 / Gtk2 based release: version
0.69. The only update in this release compared to 0.68 is a indexer
performance fix for large notebooks.

I plan to release a 0.70-rc1 release candidate either this week or in the
first week of January. This will be based on Python3 / Gtk3. Although I
have been using this branch myself now for some time every day, there will
very likely be more bugs left and thus more release candidates needed than
usual.

Once the full 0.70 release is out I will finally have some time again to
actually look at bug reports and merge requests and consider what to do for
next year. If you have open merge requests you want to get in, please check
them again and make sure they work with Python3 / Gtk3 and have no merge
conflicts for the current master.

Also there will be work needed to update the windows installer. With the
previous release in April, Brendan stated he was hoping for volunteers to
pick up porting the windows installer for Python3 / Gtk3.

Regards,

Jaap

Re: [Zim-wiki] Existing pages missing in the index

2018-09-11 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
For windows there is a "portable" version available which is setup to have
all configuration in the same folder on the USB stick.

For other versions configuration would be used from the home folder every
time -- including the indexes. You could setup a shell script to run from
the USB with local environment. Have a look at the manual for an overview
of environment parameters used.

Jaap

Re: [Zim-wiki] Fwd: Problem with alphabetical order

2018-09-11 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
This could be caused be (subtle) changes in locale settings

Have you already tried re-building the index? If not try "zim --index
/path/to/notebook".

Jaap

Looks like you are experiencing same issue reported here:
