Not sure that I agree with the "...from within the wiki, which is what
wikis are for." statement.

As a desktop wiki platform, Zim does a beautiful job of providing a way to
enter marked-up text, define inter-page linking to capture associations,
and link to files generated/maintained in other applications that are
associated with the topic of the page. I use these features (and others:
tagging, tasks, etc...) daily as a central part of my work-flow within my
wikis. Probably many other users do too.

I view dynamically editing embedded content within the wiki page as "nice
to have" but not essential. Dynamically editing textual content is what is
essential to me. Apologies if I misunderstood the point, but to me it
implied that Zim was missing the fundamental purpose of wiki's, and I
respectfully disagree: I think Zim is just about perfect...

Keep up the good work, Jaap.

is there anything i can do now, to be able to design/create and edit

Well, it would be really easy to write a plugin that opens
the image with application that has created it. Very similar
to what we do with the equation editor. Equations are also
images, but when you edit them, the related latex file is opened.

P.S. if you use an editor that saves SVG images, e.g. Inkscape
(which is not optimized for flowcharts, but can do them as well),
you can simply insert the images and use the "Open With" menu
item to open again with the editor of choice.

Quick search on freecode.com doesn't show
up much tools for this. Maybe there is a niche for a simple SVG
editor that is optimized for flowcharts and similar diagrams ?

Best way to have something like that is to look for a desktop application
that you like and then embed the images in zim. Depending on which platform
you use (windows or linux) there are different choices of programs that can
be used for this.

There is two ways to add external programs to zim. First is to put it as a
"custom tool", second is to put a template file and insert it with "Insert
-> New Attachment".
