[ZION] history of temples

2002-10-06 Thread Gary Smith

I agree with Marc that it was an excellent program given in between
sessions (I saw it today). I was impressed that they took the time to get
some great quotes from Schiffman and Cross, who are a couple of my
favorite scholars. Cross is well known for ancient Hebrew script. You
place a script in front of him, and he can date it within a decade or so
of when it was written, just by the slight differences that came about in
the script over the centuries.
I'd like to have a copy of the video/transcript also.
It definitely becomes an evidence of non-LDS scholars who are impressed
on at least one Mormon aspect: the temple.

[ZION] History of temples

2002-10-05 Thread Marc A. Schindler

I haven't seen any posts yet on this, so thought I'd just point out the
absolutely marvellous documentary that Church Public Affairs put on
between sessions today. They quoted (am going from memory -- I'm going
to try to get a lot more information, including a transcript, if I can)
from:

Host: Pres. Boyd K. Packer (who did superbly: knowledgeable, avuncular,
deep)
Other GA's: Jeffrey Holland (very well-spoken), Dean Larsen

LDS scholars: Truman Madsen and Ann Madsen (both of BYU)

non-LDS scholars: Kristan Lindqvist [sp?], former Lutheran Bishop of
Stockholm and now a dean at the Harvard Divinity School. He talked of
holy envy and said that's what he felt with respect to the LDS concept
of temples and eternal families.*
Lawrence Schiffman, of a NY university (can't remember which one), but
he's a noted DSS scholar (I have one of his books)
Frank Moore Cross, one of the best known secular biblical scholars in
the world.
Another fellow whose name I didn't catch, but who is head of the
Oriental section of the New York Public Library.

* I HAVE to get the transcript of at least this part for my family
doctor, who's German Lutheran and can't for the life of him figure out
why I would have left the Lutheran Church for die Mormonen -- what
didn't we have that you still needed? The Swedish bishop answers his
question much better than I could.
