This isn't the first aurora of the season here, but we've got some rather interesting aurora this morning. It's 03:36 MDT (what I'm doing up is a long story, but my wife gets up at 03:15 to do papers and I've asked her to get me up if there's a nice display). This one covers the entire sky in a big sweep from west to east and is white, like cirrus clouds. It shifts subtly, fading in and out. Off to the south I can catch the twinkle of what I assume is a large communications satellite.
