Here's some data I've been collecting recently. The first column is how much gas actually was way back when. The second column is how much we would have to pay for that same gallon of gas using today's dollars. The third number is the percentage of the 1950 price that we pay today.
We're doing well ladies and gentlemen.
BTW, I pay about $3.60/gal for gas here in Japan.

The interesting thing I've been seeing is that each and every year all prices rise...but, because our incomes also rise...but at a higher rate, the actual price we pay each year for things, as a percentage of our salary, reduces...while all the while looking as if they are raising. We get a better deal each and every year all the while thinking that they we aren't.
Entertainment prices though seem to be on the rise.
Here's some more... It's actually quite interesting. What do you all make of it?

Dear Jim,
Supply would be greater without the Iraq invasion, so prices would be lower. Supply/demand would force prices lower. It is also not the end of the world if we have to just do without cars. We existed before they were here, we will exist when they are gone.
Peace and all good, John A.E., n/OEF

Gas prices have now reached record high levels in the US. Over $2 per gallon in some areas.
Isn't it a good thing we mounted such an effective imperialistic war against the Iraqis, just so we could steal away their oil? I can imagine what the prices would be otherwise.
