This isn't meant to justify the current regime of Iraq in any way, but is just by way of showing how complex a place the region we usually lump together as the "Middle East" is. Saddam Hussein may hate the US, but he's no Islamic fundamentalist (again, that doesn't mean he hasn't cooperated with them for his own purposes). Women have a more open role in Iraq than in many other countries in the region:
