BTW, I also prefer to renounce war and be a peacemaker. I also support my
national leaders. I am leary of war with Iraq, not that we can't easily
win it (I think it will be a cakewalk), but because war is like divorce:
they are addictive. Just look around, when you see one person get
divorced, suddenly there are a series of people getting divorced.
Everyone gets sucked into it. So it is with war. I fear that the United
States has been so busy with fighting over the last decade, that we don't
know how to manage peace well. Truly GWBush was right when he first spoke
on this subject, where he said we should walk humbly and carefully around
the nations of the world. Yet, we seem to have forgotten that. I am glad
to see his demands have softened toward Iraq. We are not in any immediate
danger, and so we have options. Action? Yes. War? not necessarily right
now.
Regardless, It isn't an easy decision for righteous people. Capt Moroni
didn't care for war, yet had no compunction against going after
Amalickiah and later against the kingmen. He hated bloodshed, yet loved
defending liberty and family even more. I think that as long as we have
that attitude, we will do okay. Large armies? Sometimes they are
necessary for defense. Capt Moroni seemed to have large armies,
constantly building new forts and defenses. He cleared the Lamanites out
of some lands, in order to improve defense. Is that not an offensive
move? I think so.
Clearly, the reasons to go to war must be very strong and compelling.
IMHO, we have reason enough to attack Iraq. But that doesn't mean I have
to like it.
