Re: [ZION] wind power

2002-10-30 Thread Marc A. Schindler
It's a matter of price and efficiency. The wind that comes out of the Kicking Horse
Pass has been known to knock semis off the highway -- that's why so many are in that
area. They just feed into the existing provincial power grid.

Victoria has a few wind-power projects going or recently completed. I am not
convinced they are any good outside a small to medium sized town, a city of 1 - (NY
sized) would not be practical. I am concerned about it here because we have an
abundance of coal and natural gas, talking about alternatives like solar and wind
seems irrelevant.

Ironic that Alberta, which is by far the country's largest oil (and
coal) producer, also leads the country in wind power. Most of them are
those big Vestas 3-blade turbines. The place names in the chart at the
end of the article may not mean anything to those outside Alberta, but
Hillspring (a Mormon town), Pincher Creek and the Peigan Reserve are in
the "exit barrel" of tremendous winds that come pouring through the
Kicking Horse Pass. Note that some of the projects exceed 20 MW; we're
talking serious wind energy here.
