It means that no legal document can require marriage to also apply to 
same sex or other couplings.

This doesn't disallow unions for them, just proscribes that the term and 
form of marriage be saved for man and woman.

Anything other than marriage between man and wife is not marriage.  
Polygamy, polyandry, homosexual relationships, etc., are not 
marriage.  Unless people are married, they can't get the benefits of 
marriage.
