That was a mistake I made the first time I wanted to upgrade a system with zones, doing the detach before the image-update. My zones are fairly minimal, just ‘entire’ and a few extra packages, all from the dev repo. Nothing from contrib in the zones, maybe that might be a difference. you're lucky. It didn't work for me.
