Take all of the server.# lines out, including server.1 (no other change necessary). For standalone you don't need/want this. Alternately you could use org.apache.zookeeper.server.ZooKeeperServerMain (I don't think you even need to change the config file if you do that). for example: java -cp build/zookeeper-3.3.0.jar:build/lib/log4j-1.2.15.jar:conf org.apache.zookeeper.server.ZooKeeperServerMain zoo_q1.cfg works for me with the scenario you describe.
