zcatalog step in populating a catalog?

I'm sure this is simple, but have not been able to come up with the correct way.
If I do this,
dtml-call "FSSession['username'].update(REQUEST.form)"
and then retrieve with,
FSSession['username']
I get {'username':'something'}
when of course all I want is something.
