It works better than I thought it would. It allows you to store
thousands (well, I've tested it with only 1536, but I don't know of any
limit) of objects with a user interface optimized for such a large
folder.

I'm interested, but don't have time to install it at the moment. Could
someone post a gif of it's user interface please?

RE: [Zope-dev] Request for amplification on new Product permissions API.

2000-07-07 Thread Brian Lloyd

So, what do I need to do to allow controlled access to this object?
I understand that Shopper, inheriting from SimpleItem, already has
the access to unprotected subobjects flag. And I'd rather protect
the object correctly, anyway grin. I tried adding an ac_permissions
structure to the class, giving View permission to the attribute
that is throwing the unauthorized error, but that doesn't seem to
 have changed the behavior.

Are you calling:

Globals.default__class_init__(MyBasketClass)

on your Basket class? This is (poorly documented but)
necessary for permissions declared in __ac_permissions__
to be correctly initialized.

It also shows the most recently edited products first, and sorting by

Yeah, that's pretty slick. It occurs to me that the same

More Products work is on the way in the medium-term future.

I would still really appreciate it if people would change their products

have HTML quoted everything, which makes the formatting better, but some
descriptions are still less than usefull.

Perhaps a 'short_description' property could be added to the

 Thanks for your help,

You're welcome.

Most stuff 90% of sites do can be done in Zope and ZServer is great for
that. To serve from ZServer I think files have to be in Zope (but I might be
 wrong on that)...

Well, files could also be in an ordinary structure and referred to
using the External FileSystem product, which creates a link in the Zope
Object Database to a folder on your machine. I use this for legacy
compatibility - to access an old folder of images that I can't (yet)
move over to Zope only.

Re: [Zope] Stability - can you give us some advice?

2000-07-07 Thread J. Atwood

I have about 8 Zope websites of varying sizes and complexities. Early
on when I was developing in Zope I had it hang a few times but since
then (and I have done a lot of stuff for the last six months) I have
really never had it hang. Two of the sites use PostgreSQL (6.5.3 and
7.0) and four of them are served off of one instance and an old
Pentium 166.

It has been my experience that Zope itself (non-betas which you
should never be using in a production environment) is very stable and
only hang due to OS issues or really bad DTML coding (loops). If the
problems continue I would suggest trying a different OS environment
(I am a very very happy RH Linux person).

end of the day, though, as most of the people have been saying on
this list, you really shouldn't be focusing on comparing the raw
speed of two totally different applications with different feature
sets. I would challenge you to find something as powerful /useful /
extendable as Zope written in any language and if you did, we could
run those benchmarks.

What I *would* suggest focusing on is can Zope provide you with the
right amount of features and functionality and can you scale it? So,
and god willing, your site that you build in Zope goes from
0-1,000,000 hits a day, can you handle it? The answer is yes (a mix
of Pentium, 256 MB Ram and fast drives with Linux will do that). What
about if you double that or go to 10,000,000 a day? Well, that is
where ZEO and load balancing will come in. I can personally tell you
that you could set up four Pentium 300 MHz Zope installations running
a ZEO instance behind a load balance (not nearly are complicated as
it seems) and you would be able to handle most of your Yahoo dreams.

So, keep researching, asking the right questions and looking for
those answers but don't get caught up in the benchmarking game too
long, it is only one very small piece to the equation.

Good luck.

No. Not when compared to other applications that do the same *type* of thing
(which there are very very few).

Check out an interesting set of benchmarks I ran against Zope and Tomcat

Paul

When I was testing FSSession-0-4-0 before release I created all sorts of
weird situations and at least I got the impression that even under those
situations FSSession would behave ok. I suppose I could make it foolproof
by trying to serialize the contents everytime someone makes changes. This
would guarantee that no exception will be raised during commit, but as I
understand it it should be ok if an exception is raised during the first
phase of commit (ie during tpc_begin). Zope should remain in a consistent
state and the transaction machinery should clean up things ok, if
something bad happens during the first phase of commit. It is only if an
exception is raised in the second phase of commit that Zope refuses to
carry on more transactions. In any case please send me your setup that
creates such a problem with FSSession0.4.0 so I can look into it.

If you want to restrict the kind of objects that your users will store in
FSSession you could swap _dump and -load for the equivalent marshal ones.

[Zope] Problem with database packing (major data loss)

2000-07-07 Thread Richard Taylor

We have discovered a rather nasty problem.

On Zope 2.1.6 if you you pack the database with '0' in the days box
and then pack it again with '1' in the days box bad things happen. In
our case the first pack resulted in a Data.fs of 17MBytes (not bad
from a started point of nearly 2GBytes) the second pack (which I
assumed would do nothing) resulted in a Data.fs of 3MBytes. Great I
thought, however it also broke most of my site. Some of the symptoms
are:

Accessing existing folders gives KeyError
Many of my ZClasses are turned into DTML Methods (that is the icon
next to them in the folder view is a DTML Method icon)
All the instances of the broken classes are broken.

Thankfully I kept backups before performing the packs.

This is repeatable on both the servers I run.

I am now nervous of packing but have no choice.

Richard

PS. I still think Zope is great! I am just learning slowing how to run
it defensively

[Zope] FYI - poss. reindex_object alleged 'bug' workaround

2000-07-07 Thread Jeff Sasmor

Zopers and PyCoders-

I was having a problem with ZCatalog-- namely, editing
the properties of a CatalogAware item (in a custom form)
after creation resulted in no change to the indexed value in
the Catalog.

I know about reindex_object and was using that-- so it
wasn't just that I was leaving it out! Hmmm.

I read the [EMAIL PROTECTED] list archives on zope.nipltd.com
(what a great resource, thanks!!!) and found some mentions that
this was broken in 2.1.6, which is what I am using.

ANYWAY, I found that

dtml-call "_.this.reindex_object()"

solved the problem immediately (well, for me, anyway).
Just thought I would pass this on so it would be archived for
others with this problem (or at least something to try
in a moment of desperation!).

Why does this work? I have some guesses about some of the
PyCode in CatalogAwarenesss.py but I'm still too much of a
Python newbie to make any comments.

When packing, Zope makes a backup of your Data.fs as well, renaming it
Data.fs.old. You can always put back this copy.

ZEO is open source now. It used to be (a few months ago) that $25,000 but

[Zope] DTML method to add a folder and put image inside

2000-07-07 Thread John Verzani

Zope has me stumped.

I want to make a _simple_ form and process to add a folder then insert
into that folder some properties and an image. Here is what I am
trying with my DTML method for processing the form request:

dtml-call "manage_addFolder(REQUEST['id'],REQUEST['title'])"
dtml-with "REQUEST['id']"
dtml-if image
  dtml-call "manage_addImage('image',image)"
/dtml-if

dtml-call "manage_addProperty('example',example,'text')"

/dtml-with

dtml-call "RESPONSE.redirect(URL1+'/manage_workspace')"

I thought by using the dtml-with and the folder id that the
subsequent manaage_add* would add to the newly created folder. I know
I'm on the right track for when I hardcode the folder name (replace
REQUEST['id'] with a string) what I want to do works.

Thanks for any help.

[Zope] Unquoting a string.

2000-07-07 Thread Gregory Haley

Hi,

I am trying to pass a column id through a ZMySQL method
call. The thing looks like this:

UPDATE venapoll
  SET dtml-sqlvar resp type=string = last_insert_id(+1)
WHERE poll_num = 3;

where resp is a value passed in by a dtml method and can
have the value of resp0, resp1, resp3, etc. These are the
names of columns. Zope is blowing chuncks, because the
parsed call is actually:

  SET 'resp1' = last_insert_id(+1)

and ZMySQL needs to have the value passed in as

  SET resp1 = . . .

(i.e., without the quotes).

Has anyone had a problem with this?

TIA.

ciao!

[Zope] DTMLDocument content - html quoted or not

2000-07-07 Thread Aleksander Salwa

I have ZClass (called Artykul) which subclasses DTMLDocument.
This class has a method, used to view document, which appends some special
stuff to document's content. For some reasons I don't want to put this
stuff directly into document's data.
In mentioned method, to render document, I wrote:

dtml-var this

But this outputs html quoted text (so I see HTML and DTML tags in browser,
instead of formatting and variables).
When I render this object from another methods (external to this class),
everything works as usual.

Is this a bug or feature ? :)

[Zope] Error Value: managemanage_editForm

hi,

Whenever I try to change something I got AttributeError and the Error

'managemanage_editForm'
So I tried to change the permission for individal roles, they works
except the acquire permission setting part. Here I got the same error
again.
These are the error code I got form the page,

so, I look inside the setRoles function, it seems, 'self.data' contain
the name 'managemanage_editForm' which cause the error, am I right here?
I also look through the __init__() for squishdot, I couldn't see how it
pass the 'data' passes to Permisson object when it first instance.
Where should I look for to fix this 'managemanage_editForm' problems?

[Zope] Problem with _[xyz]

2000-07-07 Thread Christian Zagrodnick

Hi all,

shouldn't dtml-var xyz and dtml-var "_['xyz']" return the same result?

Well - I don't know why but only the 1st is working.
(top.German.ActualPages is a folder; tThisIs... is a dtml-method)

1:
dtml-with "top.German.ActualPages"
dtml-var tThisIsTheXYZDocument
/dtml-with

2:
dtml-with "_['top.German.ActualPages']"
dtml-var tThisIsTheXYZDocument
/dtml-with

Of course I want to replace the 'top.German.ActualPages' with a variable...
but since it doesn't work with a hardcoded string it'll not work with a
variable.

Any hint?

RE: [Zope] Number of zope processes on Linux and OpenBSD

2000-07-07 Thread Ron Bickers

I went the other way around and wondered why my single MySQL process on
FreeBSD was now a dozen or so on Linux.

As already mentioned, Linux assigns a process ID to every thread, so all
threads show in the process list. On the BSDs (and probably most, if not
all other UNIX OSs), threads are not assigned PIDs, so they don't show.

Either way, Zope is running with multiple threads on both machines.

Howdy! I have a question concerning the number of running zope

Of course, each product than includes rendered objects is only as good as

 Hi,

I am trying to pass a column id through a ZMySQL method
call. The thing looks like this:

 UPDATE venapoll
   SET dtml-sqlvar resp type=string = last_insert_id(+1)
 WHERE poll_num = 3;

where resp is a value passed in by a dtml method and can
have the value of resp0, resp1, resp3, etc. These are the
names of columns. Zope is blowing chuncks, because the
 parsed call is actually:

   SET 'resp1' = last_insert_id(+1)

and ZMySQL needs to have the value passed in as

   SET resp1 = . . .

 (i.e., without the quotes).

Has anyone had a problem with this?

I may be wrong on this, but if the dots indicate subobjects, you may
want to do this

as Python sequence syntax: "_['top']['German']['ActualPages']"

or as "_['top'][aLanguage]['ActualPages']" assuming aLanguage is a
variable which may be e.g., 'German'

I hope this is a helpful hint.

This is entirely our (Zope.org website maintainers) fault. Zope.org in it's
current state has somewhat "evolved" over time as people had some spare time
to apply fixes in between jobs, which shows in the, ahem, dare I say "quality"
of the produced HTML.

That said, we did _try_ to bring up the HTML to succesfully validate through
W3C's tools, but as it turns out Netscape's CSS implementation is so buggy we
need to leave the /H2 end-tags to keep things working.. =(

[Zope] Standard footer changed in tutorial?

2000-07-07 Thread Frank Isaacs

I'm working on the tutorial in version 2.2b3 (I know, it's a beta, caveat
emptor...)

I did lesson 4, discussing the footer and putting the e-mail link to
"webmaster" in. Then I went to lesson 5, and the footer appeared to have
been changed back to the default footer (the zope gif image and link to
zope.org). Does the tutorial reset it? If not, how did it happen?

Thanks in advance -

-Frank

PS: And how about the code for the zope link? It seems to be invisible, but
it would be nice to be able to include it if you modify the standard footer.
(I suppose I could copy and paste from a rendered html page, but... isn't it
somewhere in the object hierarchy?)

It's not a problem of size, because I have it on my computer, and I can
easily handle that amount of size.

Also, it's not the size limit inside Zope, because I have another
data.fs, and it's about 60 000, and all work fine. and it's not the zope
files around, because I run under windows, and my server run under
linux. so, when I upload the data.fs in my new zope in my computer, the
files are not the same, but I assure you that my zope in my local
machine is clean. but the proplem is still there. so I think it's in the
core of this accurate data.fs 36 000.

Re: [Zope] Problem with database packing (major data loss)

Brian, FWIW, I have a follow-on problem (CVS version from last night) ... I can
now never pack at all as it always complains that a pack to a later date has
already been done. I did a complete fresh install and tried a pack as the very
 first thing ... same problem.

Any ideas ? Anybody else have this problem or is it just me ... ?

I have a simliar problem in the CVS version. New isntall, copied over
Data.fs, go to pack, and it makes the complaint that it won't pack for
the same reasons you give. Methinks they are related somehow.
