There were ways to fall into these repeated paths in earlier versions

In 0.6 I tried to solve this once and for all with the wiki_base_url

To keep this from happening again, we will be adding an additional 40gb

This is a general problem for zope service providers and their users;
I wonder how we can resolve it ?

Related, though specific to Codeit users: I need to pack to avoid the
above, but fear the data-corrupting packing bugs which were fixed in
more recent versions of zope. Codeit, perhaps time for an upgrade ? At
least to 2.1.6 ?

[Zope] new wiki functionality/zope.org issues

2000-07-25 Thread Simon Michael

Hi Ethan,

ethan mindlace fremen [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
o Wikis are now searchable - and they have history,

Yay! where can we see this ?

Search for anything. If the icon is a white page with a bunch of funny
 black squiggies, that's a zWiki page :)

Yah I found the zwiki pages alright :) but couldn't find any trace of
the new search or history functionality ?

I've been a bit out of touch so forgive me if this is documented
somewhere obvious. A few more comments:

2. a search for "test" found WikiNG,
http://www.zope.org//Wikis/DevSite/Proposals/WikiNG which gives an
error, attached.

3. looks like you're gathering at least some of the wikis into
/Wikis/* .. nice mnemonic url. Could you make http://zope.org/Wikis
give a list/overview ? or an alias to wikicentral.

4. could we auto-login with cookies like eg slashdot ? I'm never
logged in when I need to edit a wiki and doing so is quite disruptive.
And, or, make the login page auto-redirect back to where I came from.

It's great to have someone visible and active working on this stuff -
thanks,

-Simon

[Zope] zwiki mailing list ? RFC

2000-07-26 Thread Simon Michael

I'm getting a steady trickle of private mail, interesting comments
patches, all of which would benefit the community but currently end up
mouldering in my mail archives.

I'm thinking of activating the zwiki mailing list at sourceforge, as a
repository for the above and perhaps a testbed for
mailing-list/zwikiweb integration.

On the other hand I'm against too much fragmentation of our
discussions - things are bad enough already! - and I like to use the
zope list where possible.

If you have any thoughts either way, I'd like to hear 'em.

Could this be done by moving joyful/zwiki to zope.org? If so, we could use
the same (zope@ and zope-dev@ + wiki) mechanisms so long as there is clarity
between the aims of ZWiki and WikiNG (clearly posted on both wikis).

I'd be open to this if it were advantageous.. don't see a problem at
the moment.

Trying to keep abreast of an active sourceforge/zwiki as well as
 joyful/zwiki, zope/WikiNG, zope@ and zope-dev@ at the same time
would be even more of a trial than I find it now.

I can definitely relate (just surveyed all of the zope.org
wikis). What I had in mind was mirroring the zwiki mail list to
zwikiweb; you would not have to visit both. I've seen mail/zwiki
integration in a few places but I'm not sure if it has been solved
well yet.

Really I'm looking for something new which combines the best features
of a wiki, a mailing list and a newsgroup. Has anyone got any ideas on
this ?

 3. While this does work:
 dtml-if "_['sequence-index'] == 0"
(dtml-var count-adassnum Records found)
 /dtml-if

I say this is confusing. Don't tell me to read the Namespace
How-to, or the Zope User Guides, I did, and it's still confusing!
Unless you find an example, that does exactly what you want, trying to
figure it out with the documentation available can be difficult. I
found my answer to this in the
"How-To: (How-to) access the field names and fields of any arbitrary
ZSQL query", but it took a lot of searching the
Zope site for references to 'dtml-in'. I get so frustrated with DTML, I
want to scream. Please don't tell me to buy the Zope book, DTML should
be more intuitive. DTML maybe the heart
of Zope, but it's also it's achilles heel.

[Zope] Zwiki 0.40 released, news for 2005/03

2005-04-01 Thread Simon Michael

What is it
Zwiki is a Zope product for building wikis - a special kind of website
that's easy for anyone to edit.
See http://zwiki.org
for more.

What's changed
Bugfixes, new japanese translation, chinese translation updates, new
search option.
See release notes below.

Zwiki news this month
We have been quiet but not idle. Bill Page and Martijn Pieters
contributed fixes, T.C. Chou updated the chinese translations and
Masaya Kato and a team of fellow translators contributed a japanese
translation. Zettai.net made a donation, again, in support of Zwiki
development and hosting. Thank you!

Bug reporting rate has been low and steady; bug closing rate has been
low. The next Zwiki Bug Day is.. today! april 1st being the first
friday of
the month. I wasn't ready but it's going on anyway as scheduled, help
at http://zwiki.org/BugDay and
#zwiki if you can.

In the documentation department I am doing a little work on http://zwiki.org/NewAdministratorsGuide
each day.

Discussion on the list, UserDiscussion page and irc channel has been
light. We've had a few incidents of wiki spam this month, both
intentional and otherwise. I switched zwiki.org to mail out all edits,
to make this more visible; we list subscribers are adapting to the
increased level of traffic and have discussed how to batch related
edits into fewer mails.

This month I resolved to focus on QA for 2005:

"Alright.. this may be difficult, but (deep breath):
I resolve not to work on new Zwiki features in 2005.
I may well accept them from others, but I won't do them myself. This is
to focus (my) energy on refactoring, cleanup, polish, docs, and fixing
"broken windows". More:

in case that was unclear, this is not Zwiki winding down; it's
a
quality push for 1.0. Feature work from others is welcome as ever.
tasks that are funded in some way will almost always jump to
the head of the queue and become priority no. 1, as before."

See http://zwiki.org/ZwikiRoadmap2005
for more.

Zopewiki news
Edits on zopewiki.org have been light; small ongoing improvements
from a small number of people.
Someone has started a http://zopewiki.org/PageTemplateStyleGuide
.

Server news
The zwiki.org/zopewiki.org server basically ran all month without
exceeding the 200M memory quota or restarting and performance has been
reasonable. Those wikis currently have 2164 and 464 pages respectively.

About the Zwiki project
Zwiki was started in 1999 by Simon Michael and now receives
improvements from many contributors. It is released under the GNU GPL.
A new version is released on the first of the month.

Release notes

Zwiki 0.40.0 2005/04/01

 Summary

Bugfixes, new japanese translation, chinese translation updates,
 new search option.

 Upgrade notes

This fixes a high-profile known issue in 0.39, #1062. If you
didn't already find the issue page and workaround, upgrade to this
 version to fix it.

 Changes

 Browsing

 * add a "thorough" non-catalog search to search form, commented
  out (for spam hunting)

 Editing

 * fix the keys attribute error when creating pages in plone
(#1062)

 * deleting a top-level page redirects to the front page again;
new
upUrl method (#917, Martijn Pieters, SM)

 Issue tracking

 * no bogus property change. Some very aggressive search engines
(spiders) seem to be following form action="" references in
pages as well as the usual href links. As a result probes by
such greedy theives can cause unexpected changes to wiki web
pages. One such example recently has been the triggering of the
Change button on the Issue pages. The script
changeIssueProperties should be more careful not to record any
change if the Change action is triggered with no actually
  changes. (Bill Page)

 General - i18n

 * new japanese translation (Masaya Kato, Manabu Terada, Yoshiki
Shibukawa, Takayuki Shimizukawa, Junya Ogino, Takanori Suzuki)

 * chinese translation updates (T.C. Chou)

 * updated all po files from latest pot

 General - skins

 * the site_logo folder property didn't work in plone

[Zope] Re: ZWiki - MoinMoin markup

2005-04-01 Thread Simon Michael
Hi Malthe,
I don't think moin markup allows html tags, so br is out.
Also, consider whether this work will really pay off. Unless it gets
incorporated into the upstream MoinMoin code, it might or might not make
sense to support a non-standard moin markup feature in the shipping
Zwiki. But I don't want to discourage you, perhaps you just want this
for local use.

It's not clear to me either, but I think:
- the class you need to change is Parser
- start by looking at formatting_rules. The format() method may also be
relevant.

- try to find some other formatting rule that's similar, and copy/tweak
it. Perhaps li ?

- the regexps named there are somehow handled by the similarly-named
repl methods, like _li_repl()

- you might find more help with this code on the moin channel/list/wiki.

2005-05-18 Thread Simon Michael
Seems I'm never going to finish this.. just *post* it!
*What is it ?*
Zwiki is a Zope product for building wikis - a special kind of website
that's easy for anyone to edit. Zwiki was started in 1999 by Simon
Michael and now receives improvements from many contributors. It is
released under the GNU GPL. A new version is released on the first of
the month. See http://zwiki.org for more.

Configuring
* restrict external links: if a max_anonymous_links int property is
defined, edits from unidentified users (with no username) containing
more than that number of http:// links will be refused and logged
* delayed indexing: pages now include the NOINDEX meta tag for 24 hours
after an edit, to reduce the chance of spam links being indexed by
search engines.
Browsing
* show page source links when using thorough search, to help with spam
cleanup

[Zope] zopewiki news for april

2005-05-18 Thread Simon Michael
*About the Zopewiki project*
zopewiki.org aims to be a simple, comprehensive, user-maintained
repository for Zope documentation, notes and links - a hitch-hiker's
guide to Zope. See http://zopewiki.org for more.

*News*
In april, the wiki seemed to come alive due to the number of different
people editing (10, as a rough guess). There has been a fair amount of
cleanup activity in recent weeks.

Some anti-spam measures were installed and there have been no spam
incidents recently. This impacts users, however: you will not be allowed
to add external links until you have configured a username at
http://zopewiki.org/ZopeWiki/useroptions . At the moment this is not
spelled out explicitly.

The mirrored ZopeBook content has been removed in favour of links to the
master copy at plope.com. There is a page linking to each chapter, which
might serve for annotation/discussion of the chapters as long as
backtalk comments are disabled.

2005-09-15 Thread Simon Michael

Hi Nicholas,

I think use of the encoding argument just failed two lines above that
one, and so Dieter's suggestion may not work.

In your event log at blather severity, or on the console if you start
with zopectl fg -Xdebug-mode=on, you should see:

ZWiki... Warning: unicode() LookupError for encoding ___, WikiNames
will not use the system locale

What is the encoding it reports there ? Is it trying a strange one due
to your product setting the locale ? (usually not recommended,
incidentally..)

It shouldn't crash of course. As a workaround you could try:

 lang, encoding = None, None

at line 79. Feel free to take this to http://zwiki.org/1158 if you like.

[Zope] Re: ZWiki RecentChanges as RSS feed

2005-10-05 Thread Simon Michael

Hi Peter,

I've got a Zwiki instance that works just fine. If I visit it at
http://localhost:8080/wiki/RecentChanges?action=rss_rc I get a nice
feed of all the recent changes.

I'm not familiar with ?action=rss_rc at all, it sounds like a local
customization.

But I don't want to reach it by URL, I want to reach it
programmatically. How do I do that??

return self.wiki.RecentChanges() gives an AttributeError.

If you want to know why, post the traceback and I'll say more.
Generally, to get a zwiki page to render itself programmatically, give
it a REQUEST. Eg self.wiki.RecentChanges(REQUEST=REQUEST). In certain
contexts you might still have skin trouble, in which case try
self.wiki.RecentChanges(REQUEST=REQUEST,bare=1) to render without the skin.

Current Zwiki has changes_rss and pages_rss methods built in, eg
wiki.AnyPage.pages_rss().

Cheers

Have a look at the changes_rss method in RSS.py (in 0.46). It calls
pages(), which is essentially a catalog query restricted to this folder.
You could move this method back to a pythonscript and tweak that query,

[Zope] Zwiki contributor policy update

2005-12-11 Thread Simon Michael

Hi all!

I'm slightly burned out and bored with certain areas of Zope 2 Zwiki
development. I think the product will provide some value for a while
yet, and it's not too late to shake things up and make a bigger splash.
If we don't do this during the period of Zwiki Zope 2's
relevance, our good work will bring less benefit than it might have. So
I'm putting out a call for help. I'd really like to see more people
take on development of Zwiki.

What are the roadblocks - of my making, and otherwise - to a more
active Zwiki developer community ?
For one thing I needed to nail down some copyright/license issues more
explicitly, to make contributing and accepting contributions more of a
no-brainer. Here's my latest thinking:
LICENSE
Much Zope code uses the ZPL. We want to maximize code sharing and
participation with the whole Zope community. Much of the rest of the
FOSS world uses the GPL, and the same goes for them. Dual GPL/ZPL
licensing may seem a good option, but I'm convinced it's not worth the
added complexity, legal uncertainty and fragmentation; either straight
GPL or straight ZPL is preferable.
GPL is the mainstream license for the future IMHO, I think it's still
the best option, and I have no plan to leave it. Also I think we
should adopt GPLv3? when it's ready. That said, there's now
clear policy allowing non-GPL code to be added
to Zwiki if necessary (below). Also I remain open to license
exemption requests from Zope developers.
COPYRIGHT
I no longer think the single copyright holder policy is best for
this
project, and I'm going to drop it. I am changing the main repo's
policy to multiple copyright holders ( allowing multiple
licenses),
with the simple condition that the overall project manager is assigned
the right to relicense to newer license versions. The powerful darcs
revision control system (together with new CONTRIBUTORS list) should
help us to keep track of copyright licensing status and even
remove
problematic commits later if needed.
CONTRIBUTOR'S AGREEMENT
To ensure that everyone gets proper credit for their work; a clear
audit trail and legal status for the project; and that the project can
remain license-compatible with other free open-source software in
future, I have added a very simple contributor agreement/contributor
list: http://zwiki.org/repos/ZWiki/CONTRIBUTORS.txt
. All Zwiki contributors should read and consider signing this file, to
help us meet these goals. You can follow this easy procedure to add
your name to the glorious list:

(install darcs if needed, see http://darcs.net/DarcsWiki/CategoryBinaries)
 darcs get --partial http://zwiki.org/repos/ZWiki
 cd ZWiki
echo "- Your Name [EMAIL PROTECTED]" CONTRIBUTORS.txt
 darcs record -a -m"signed it" CONTRIBUTORS.txt
(enter your name email address again)
 darcs send

This will become the authoritative list of code committers (at least),
and I'll be working to make sure all of you are listed properly. Many
have donated their time and creativity over the years - this list will
make that clearer.

All comments, help and other ideas welcome. And I hope to see some of
you online or off. Happy holidays, and thanks

-Simon

[Zope] how to add zopewiki product pages

2006-03-16 Thread Simon Michael

Following on from a zope-dev thread:

On 3/15/06, Chris Withers [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Simon Michael wrote:
You forgot to make a page under http://zopewiki.org/Products . Doh! :)

Only half joking. If I'm looking for a dimly-remembered product from six
months ago, this is where I find what I need to know fastest.

Is there any chance I could persuade you to add some info on them all?

(or at least some stub pages you can point me at to edit?)

There are a lot, and more than that I don't think it's a great model to
have me typing in every product page myself.

On the other hand.. it wouldn't take *that* long..

If you and I another volunteer or three spent 10 minutes a day on #zope, it
wouldn't take long at all.

Here's three ways to add a page:

- create by url: go to http://zopewiki.org/TheProduct . If it isn't found,
click the create button. Enter some notes. Even a single hyperlink or a
one-line description is a good start.

- create in the right place: go to http://zopewiki.org/products . Scroll
down, look for a suitable sub-category and go there. Enter TheProduct in
the page management form at the bottom of the page and click the create button.

- create by mail-in: subscribe (http://zopewiki.org/ZopeWiki/subscribeform)
and then forward email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

Here are some niceties, which you can follow if you like:

- include the word ZopeProduct, to unambiguously mark this page as a
distinct zope product. This is a little bit handy for things like
http://zopewiki.org/WikiStats#products .

- the first paragraph is used as the page summary, so make it a nice snappy
overview.

- after that, add the home page link and any others you want. Most pages
use STX's -- definition lists.

- subscribe to the wiki or watch the front page to hear about and augment
new product pages

[Zope] FAQ writing tips (Re: combining all zope2 FAQs into one big one at wiki.zope., org/zope2)

2006-11-07 Thread Simon Michael
PS, here's a word of warning to FAQ writers from my own experience, a trap
to avoid:

You start writing answers for questions - it's so easy and tempting -
later you find better answers out on the web, even elsewhere in the same
wiki, but now you have a big, verbose body of duplicated docs that's too
good to throw away but not quite valuable enough to attract a lot of
maintenance. Result: stagnation.

How to avoid this ? Maybe keeping these goals in mind will help:

- research, link, gather, consolidate docs first; write new ones as last resort

- keep answers in the faq short and to the point, link to best detailed
docs elsewhere

- avoid unnecessary duplication. Use the contents link to see what's in the
zope2 and other zope wikis. Refactor the wiki content aggressively when
appropriate.

Also, long wiki pages are less fun to edit than short ones, use an external
editor for FAQ work to avoid this pain. Emacs users, try rst-mode.el.

[Zope] Happy Valentine's Day from Zwiki HQ

2008-02-14 Thread Simon Michael

Hello Zopistas.. a happy Valentine's day to all!

Continuing with my spring cleaning theme over at
http://zwiki.org/GeneralDiscussion , here are some musings.

Like many of you, I'm always wondering where is the most useful place to
spend my community hacking time. Sometimes Zwiki seems like the very
best place; other times it doesn't. Development pretty much came to a
full stop at times last year. So I'm kicking around some ideas.

I'm pondering what slows down my Zwiki hacking.
First, let me get one thing off my chest: for me, Python is a `blub
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blub`_! There, I said it. Moving on..
then, there are the usual questions of project and platform maturity,
legacy cruft, how many people actually use this thing, what is the
benefit, what's the future potential, etc. Don't get me wrong, I expect
Python and Zope 2 to keep growing and succeeding for a very long time.
And so I guess Zwiki will continue to be used and perhaps grow in user
base. At the current rate of development, though, we will not stay
competitive with other software or even catch up with our own bug
reports. Looking at current code, I am reminded that Zwiki 0.x is
mature, built on early zope 2 architecture, and that cleanup continues
to be expensive (compared to starting something fresh).

Of course, many hands make light work. Imagine ten developers working on
Zwiki at once - cleanup expense would no longer be noticeable, we could
pretty much do whatever we want. That's not our current reality. Is it
possible to find ten Zwiki developers now or in future ? I'm sure I
could increase our numbers (from two active) by sustained effort, but
how far and how smart a strategy that is I don't know.

Another idea which inspired this post is to branch, mothballing 0.x
as-is and moving development focus to a Zwiki 2.x where we would do
aggressive disruptive cleanup. Say we did that. What would you throw out
of Zwiki 0.x ? What would you keep ?

This is to air these thoughts, solicit your ideas, and also a kind of
ping to gauge support for the project circa 2008, I guess.

Warm regards - Simon

[Zope] A Zwiki roadmap

2008-02-16 Thread Simon Michael

All -

thanks for the interesting feedback on zwiki.org, zope/plone-user lists
and #zwiki channel. Based on this I see the following as a good roadmap.

- Plone needs native wiki-ish solutions that fit the Plone model. It's
time to stop chasing Plone, remove the CMF/Plone support (simplifing
code and skins), and focus on plain Zope 2 as our platform.

- Ideally there would be one last release to fix cosmetic issues with
current Plone 3 support. Anyone who wanted Zwiki in Plone would use this
version. This, call it Zwiki Classic, would enter mothball/deep
maintenance mode. (We might call it 1.0. Don't freak out. I'm just saying.)

- New development would focus on a 2.x branch where we would drop
backwards compatibility, do very aggressive cleanup and generally make
our life easier. Other priorities would be all-unicode, ease of hosting,
pluggability and modularisation, moving to zope3 technologies, and
extracting reusable python/zope3 libs. This would be a refactor not a
ground-up rewrite - we should be able to use it pretty much right away.

- Z3wiki (the all-zope3, ZPL zwiki codebase) might be able to use and
help extract libs from above. I don't expect to work on z3wiki directly
myself because Zope 2 is our mainstream appserver and because I prefer
to spend most of my time in GPL-land.

So there is one possible path into the future, though I don't yet know
how far down it we'll go. zwiki.org has a hundred subscribers, but I'm
not hearing strong support/interest/need. And there are other projects
and other implementation strategies to explore. One basic issue is that
with wikis proliferating and traffic intensifying, 100%-dynamic,
memory-intensive wikis are not always economic. Eg for slashdottings and
for busy developers, an RCS-based solution like ikiwiki is attractive.
And so on. Just pondering; we shall see. As always, further thoughts
welcome.

Don't wait, just hit reply now! :)

Testimonials are like a micro-review, typically a short quote. (Longer
reviews are of course welcome too!) They should come from your real
experience with Zwiki, and be honest (negative reviews are also
useful.) Include the name you'd like to appear with the quote; the
strongest testimonials include a real full name and organization. You
might mention whether you are using Zwiki with or without Plone. If I
can collect enough positive ones, I'll start rotating them on the

Some reasons many Zope developers may have moved on, with a tear in

[Zope-Annce] zopewiki news for april

[Zope-Annce] Zwiki 0.43 released

2005-07-01 Thread Simon Michael

A quickie:

Changes: Chinese and Spanish translation updates (thank you T.C. Chou
and Gaspar Quiles) and a fix for setupDtmlMethods in plone sites. A
couple of fixes from Stefan Rank are still pending.

I'm in Ireland until the end of july, and on dialup, so you won't see me
on #zwiki as much. But I may get in some hacking soon.

Hope you're having fun,
-Simon

[Zope-Annce] Zwiki 0.45 released

2005-09-02 Thread Simon Michael

Zwiki is a free wiki engine for Zope, for creating both standard Zope
and CMF/Plone wikis. You can find out all about it at http://zwiki.org .

This month we have some http://joyfulsystems.blogspot.com/2005/09/bug-squashing.html
and the return of CMF metadata. Thanks to alecm, jbb, Tim Olsen and
Mark Ferrell in particular.

 Summary
Robustness fixes, Plone 2.1 compatibility fixes, simplifications,
CMF metadata support.
 Upgrade notes
You might want to delete the "outline" object using the ZMI,
allowing Zwiki to create a more ZMI-compliant one. Note this will lose
any manual re-ordering of subtopics you may have done.
The default colour for "serious" issues is lighter. This will take
effect for each issue page as it is edited. To make all pages show the
correct colour right away, visit SomePage/upgradeAll in your browser.
 Changes
 Installing

make the outline cache replaceable to avoid errors during
migration of plone 2.1rc3 sites (#1143, SM, alecm)
make catalog lookup more robust when there is another object
named Catalog (#1132, SM, Tim Olsen)
catch errors when importing page types and plugins at startup
(#809, #1148)
make fit import error at startup less verbose (#1054)

 Configuring

make the outline cache object fully ZMI-manageable (#1144)
drop support for alternate catalog names via SITE_CATALOG property
drop support for overriding the contents view with a SiteMap page
don't update page creation times when moving/renaming/importing
in the ZMI

 Browsing
 Editing

fix page creation/editing breakage in plone 2.1 due to explicit
acquisition (#1137, SM, alecm)
enable CMF/Plone document metadata support (jbb)

 Page hierarchy
 Mail
 Issue tracking

make the serious issue default colour lighter
allow issues without numbers (with at least a "status" property)

 General - i18n

  remove unnecessary -en po files
add missing headers for german po
drop unnecessary -PT for pt po files
fix space-separated i18n attributes to avoid deprecation warnings
on startup

 General - skins

make hasSkinTemplate check filesystem templates, such as the
alternate subtopics template (#1113, Mark Ferrell, SM)
drop the special style for ratings, for now

 General

allow create to work without a request, for debugging
merge moin_support.py with moin.py for easier handling
don't bother noting pre-renders in the transaction log (#948)
  drop unused getSkinTemplateWithDefault method

Best,
-Simon

[Zope-Annce] Zwiki 0.52 released

2006-04-02 Thread Simon Michael
No time for foolery! Alas. Zwiki 0.52 has been released at
http://
zwiki.org . Zwiki
is a free, powerful, easy to use and manage wiki engine for Zope 2; it
works with standard Zope, CMF or Plone sites. Here is the news. Summary Restructured Text fixed now the default markup, standard skin templates refactored and used for plone, zwiki/plone skin
switching always available, wiki navigation links and issuebrowser (re-)enabled, better styles, zope 2.7 support fixed, slow freeform link rendering fixed, translation updates including a new Thai
translation, much code cleanup. Upgrade notes A lot of skins code has changed. Your old wikis should keep working as before except: - if you have a customized ``recentchanges`` or ``searchwiki``
template you'll need to delete it or replace with the latest and re-customize - full/simple/minimal links in old custom skin templates will no longer work. -
http://zwiki.org/HowToUseTheStandardSkinInPlone is now built in, if you made a Zwiki CMF skin you can delete it. Changes
Installing * fix startup failure with Zope 2.7 (#1222, Frank Laurijssens) * fix a mysterious new bug with cmf/plone registration (#1237) Configuring * leave site links enabled by default again (home, changes,
issues...) * fix container context, make page management form create button respect folder permission (#1220) Browsing * switching between plone and standard zwiki skins in CMF/plone
sites is now always available, and no longer changes the url. Just use the - and + access keys (in firefox: alt minus, alt plus). * fix the two-year-old freeform links speed regression (#818,
Warren Holt, Simon Michael) * fix double-linking of bare urls in rst pages * add standard RST styles and latest zwiki.org tweaks to stylesheet - black headings subtopic links, limited text
width, etc. * tweak rst comment headings - remove blank line after heading, don't italicise username * fix too-small headings on RST pages, and don't show so many RST
warnings (#1224) * work better with plone livesearch * UserOptions.dtml was missing a (Andrew Milton) * remove unneeded styling of external editor icon
 * remove unnecessary inconsistent-looking access key on logo * show a heading on all views except editform Editing * make restructured text the default page type, change page type
order in editform. (AdoptRestructuredText) As of today, RST is the default page type. Hurrah! And three cheers for trusty old STX, which served us well. It is still the page type of choice when you want to do stuff with embedded DTML
or HTML. * fix error displayed on first comment to an RST page (#1233) * show HTML (WYSIWYG) in the editform when Epoz is available * remove editform's hard-coded gray background
Page hierarchy * make backlinks form smarter * make singletons have same style as other links in contents Mail Issue tracking * don't bother showing (property change) in issue mailouts
 * provide a link to issuebrowser by default * make IssueBrowser show categories more usefully out of the box Translations * Thai translation started (Bunyawat Singchai)
 * update po files from rosetta and code, simplify file names General * namegeddon. File and class renames and re-ordering for clarity and better organization eg in wing ide
 * major refactoring of skin templates using macros, the same templates are now used for standard plone skins (ViewGeddon) * document skin code in Views.py * use PageTemplateFile so view templates will reload in debug mode
(macros still don't) * move all images to skins dir, use the standard zwiki page icon in plone * standard_error_message cleanupsUrls:

2006-06-06 Thread Simon Michael
Zwiki 0.54 has been released. This one comes you from the garden, in
lovely county Wicklow. Thanks for all bug reports and input.

[Zope-Annce] Zwiki 0.57 released

2006-10-02 Thread Simon Michael

Good day all!

Zwiki 0.57 has been released. If you feel like it's been a while since
last announcement, you're right. I have been in an intense phase of
travelling, work hunting, adapting to a new job, and could not avoid the
hiatus, for which I apologise.

To be precise, in september, 0.56 was released but not announced on
zope-announce; in august, 0.55 was released but not announced on
zope-announce or zwiki.org; and in july, there was no release. Ack! Thus
ends my four-year run of monthly releases. If you're interested in
helping out with release management, or have ideas for simplifying Zwiki
processes, get in touch.

Thanks for your support. Peace,
-Simon

[Zope-Annce] ANN: more zope.org wikis moved, zopewiki.org renamed

2006-10-26 Thread Simon Michael

Zopistas,

all wikis that were under http://zope.org/Wikis have now been moved to
http://wiki.zope.org .

The old wikis have been made read only. 60 wikis were moved. ~500 old dtml
methods and ~1500 old wiki help pages were cleaned out. Mail subscriptions
still need a little work.

Enjoy! You may see some excellent docs you never saw before, I certainly
did. I'm sure there's a lot of cleanup opportunities here - jump in.

Also, zopewiki.org has been renamed to http://wiki.zope.org/zope2 . The old
url was great to use, but the new one will fit better with the new scheme.
Old zopewiki urls will redirect.

All of these wikis should share cookies, so you only have to set your zwiki
options once. All should have similar edit policies - full edit access,
username option required.

Please reply here with any problems. Thanks for going along with this - it
was satisfying. :)

[Zope-Annce] Zwiki 0.58 released

2006-11-01 Thread Simon Michael

Zwiki 0.58 has been released:

Simpler skin customization, bugfixes, cleanups.

Upgrade notes
If you have a very old zwiki relying on standard_wiki_header
  standard_wiki_footer dtml methods, these will now be ignored;
you must use a wikipage page template to customise the skin.
I don't think this will affect anyone (let me know if it did!)

Installing
  * remove bad import from CMFInit breaking CMF/Plone installation (#1291,
#1295)
  * /upgradeAll now sets up a catalog and tries to fix some common
character encoding problems

Configuring
  * accept zodb skin templates with .pt or .dtml suffixes too, for easy upload
  * when adding a wiki, keep image and file suffixes
  * when adding a wiki, set the stylesheet's content type to text/css
  * code cleanup, drop standard_wiki_header/standard_wiki_footer support
  * add use_issue_links boolean property

Browsing
  * help page cleanups, link UsersGuide
  * clarify username option help
  * fix subtopics layout interference from unterminated stx lists
literal blocks (#625)
  * improve contents page styling, make it like subtopics (but bigger)
  * fix star image in message-board-style subtopics template (#1305)

Editing
  * fix editform helppage link
  * clarify page type names, change type to markup

Issue tracking
  * set a medium severity when mailing in a new issue (kludgy, just
picks the middle list element)

General
  * use a more stable contents url to reduce bot traffic (#762, #699)
(Simon Michael, Daniel Yount, Michael Haubenwallner, Sascha Welter)
  * handle unrecognised page types properly
  * numericVotes method to get votes without voter identities
  * merge Wikis.py into __init__ and Admin

[Zope-Annce] Zwiki release process

2006-12-02 Thread Simon Michael

Dear Zopistas and Zwiki fans,

There will be no Zwiki release today; I haven't had time to work on the
project. I apologise for being less active lately.

I expect to put some more energy into it soon, but in the meantime if
anyone wants to step up and take on some project/release management
responsibility, to get things moving faster, that could be very useful.
Please contact me if you're interested! Otherwise I will probably change
the release schedule and process a bit to suit my current work/personal
situation.

Best wishes to all

I wonder what Simon Michael is up to nowdays?

I have been visiting family.. I'll be back in the US next week.

Great thread here. I also feel this pain, grovelling around between

I wonder if we should expose all messages, edits and annotations in
some RSS/RDF-like format, for easier syncing/monitoring/indexing of
the different forums and to faciliate alternate UIs.

Re: [Zope-dev] I feel your Wiki Pain ;-)

2000-09-22 Thread Simon Michael

I like where you're going with this Martijn.

Spurred on by your concrete examples, how about this: every wiki page
has an email address and functions as a "mailing list". Eg: I could
subscribe or send edits to

ZWikiWeb:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
StructuredTextWiki:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (defaults to the front page)

A zwikiweb could be seen as a hierarchy of very lightweight mail
lists. When I subscribe to a page(list), I would also receive
edits(mail) to its child pages(lists) by default.

Implementation: a sufficiently smart mail server, or (better?) build
on the "mail into zope" project for an all-zope solution. Eg: I might
install and configure the "ZWikiMail" product, and suddenly my
existing wikis are mail-enabled..

Comments ?

[Zope-dev] Flat Database/ZPatterns api, performance ?

2000-10-26 Thread Simon Michael

Flat Database (was ListMate) is just what I need to whip up an
interface for non-technical administrators - thanks. So I migrated two
data tables ("workshops" "registrations") from gadfly to flatdb
instances using the CSV import feature, and the admin interface is
working fine.

I'm having a hard time, though, figuring out how to access the data
programmatically. I scavenged the docs (zpatterns wiki very helpful,
as far as it went; not much available for flatdb), searched the lists
(nothing) and grovelled around in the code. I'd appreciate any
comments or advice on the following.

1. how can I look up a row in the table by column value, other than
searching the whole table: ?

  dtml-in "workshops.entryValues()"
  dtml-if "getProperty('col_workshopid') == workshop"
  dtml-var "getProperty('col_description')"
  /dtml-if
  /dtml-in

2. how can I add an entry to a table ? I tried this:

  dtml-let entry="registrations.manage_addEntry()"
  dtml-call "entry.manage_addProperty('col_workshopid','string','TEST')"
  dtml-call "entry.manage_addProperty('col_firstname','string','TEST')"
  dtml-call "entry.manage_addProperty('col_lastname','string','TEST')"
  ...
  /dtml-let

and it seems to create a number of spurious rows with only the first
field set. This didn't work either:

  dtml-call "registrations.manage_addEntry().manage_changeProperties(
  col_workshopid='TEST', col_firstname='TEST', col_lastname='TEST', ... )"

3. displaying table contents seems quite slow. On this P100 with 48Mb
ram doing nothing but zope, no load and generally snappy, generating
the 50-row, 20-column registrations table listing takes 15
seconds. Any ideas about where this comes from ?

4. this is my first encounter with the mighty zpatterns. I wonder how
one might add a thing (data plugin ?) so that FlatDb could read the
data out of zgadfly or something faster, instead of migrating it as I
did ?

Many thanks!

[Zope-dev] ZWiki 0.7.0 release candidate (was Re: Cruft on dev.zope.org)

2000-10-30 Thread Simon Michael

He 8-) ... sounds like a good time to mention the below
(and Ken, your new feature priorities look very close to mine):

I have uploaded a release candidate:
http://zwiki.org/zwikidir/releases/ZWiki-0.7.0.tgz .

Please hammer on it if you can - tomorrow is an auspicious date for
release!

ZWiki 0.7.0 2000-10-31 "Halloween!"

* cookie-based user options, including edit form size, timezone,
bookmarks and wikiwikiweb-style username (help from Phil Armstrong)

* ZWiki is now zope 2.2-compatible (Garth Kidd) and -requiring,
and benefits from the 2.2 security model. Executable dtml pages
now run with those permissions that are common to both the
page-viewing user and the wiki web's owner. Set the folder's
owner to limit the permissions of executable pages.

* incorporated updated Chris Withers' product for creating wiki webs

* added streamlined "hierarchal2" wiki style other layout tweaks

* wikiwikiweb-style late page creation

* added simple javascript-disabling code

* made paths work with virtual hosting again (Evan Simpson)

* fixed unreliable ! line protection in structuredtext modes

* fixed unreliable remote wiki links in classicwiki mode

* more permissive remote wiki link regexps (Geoff Gardiner)

* "with this" dtml kludge no longer needed

* added built-in defaults for all dtml methods

* simpler, more consistent urls api

* code refactoring/cleanups, other misc. bugfixes

how can I invoke zserver such that I will get the interactive debug

server in the normal way with a web browser, poke around, let it run
on and do it again. I was able to do this in the past and it's useful.

[Zope-dev] zwiki 0.7.0 bugfix

2000-11-02 Thread Simon Michael

this should resolve a problem with the recent release. From
http://zwiki.org/FrontPageNews:

"The original (pre-0.7.0) problem was this: in dtml modes, initial
lines containing : followed by a blank line were not rendered (because
they were considered to be http headers).

The symptoms of my interim fix in 0.7.0 are this: ^M's appear at the
beginning of pages and blank lines sometimes get eaten.

I think I have a suitably ugly workaround now. It's running here and
available in http://zwiki.org/zwikidir/releases/ZWiki-0.7.1rc3.tgz,
please try it out."

I do have other problems with IE 5.0 in that it has a limit on the
number of things I can 'copy' and 'paste' - in general I don't bother
doing it and export and reimport folders etc. I'd really like to know
why it's behaving like that, I do have a *lot* of cookies in my IE and
have also heard that the sequence in which HTTP headers are sent to IE
can be an issue to (sigh)

Thanks, that helps a lot! To narrow it down, if not to solve it :(

It does appear that the problem is not with zwiki, but that HTTP form
data headers are being sent in some unusual format and confusing
zope. I wonder if you experience mac-IE-specific problems with other
zope forms or forms in general. I suppose it could be related to your
cut/paste problems.

I'm cc'ing the list, perhaps someone knows more.

Re: [Zope-dev] License issues

2000-11-14 Thread Simon Michael

Juan, thanks for shining some light towards this murky area. Maybe
ZWiki and other zope products need to be LGPL or dual-licensed, maybe
the zope license can use some refinement. I for one won't know without
seeing some enlightened discussion of the issue.

This stuff is unsexy but important.

Best regards,

[Zope-dev] zwiki ZUnit support added

2000-11-22 Thread Simon Michael

This is great, Lalo! Thanks.

I checked in ZUnit support to ZWiki-cvs, and the first couple of unit
tests. Suddenly, I feel all Extreme!

FWIW, here's how I run the tests. I made a TestRunner called
ZWikiTests, pointing to "Products.ZWiki.TestSuite". I have these rules
in a makefile:

  unit-test test:
@wget -nv
'http://username:password@localhost:port/ZWikiTests/manage_startTests' -O
TESTOUTPUT
@cat TESTOUTPUT

  refresh:
@wget --spider -nv

After making some changes to the product files, I

 make refresh test
200 OK

14:03:17
URL:http://username:password@localhost:port/ZWikiTests/manage_startTests [34] -
"TESTOUTPUT" [1]
 .
.
 .

Time: 1.329s

OK (3 tests)

This rocks. In fact, as I ran the above it caught a typo in
ZWiki/Tests.py which otherwise you all would have had to deal with.

I added some ZUnit tests which invoke Tim Peters' doctest testing
framework in the zope environment. More at http://zwiki.org/DocTest

[Zope-dev] (was Flat Database/ZPatterns api, performance ?)

Flat Database (was ListMate) is just what I need to whip up an
interface for non-technical administrators - thanks. So I migrated two

  working fine.

I wrote flat database because I wanted some features ListMate didn't have
and didn't want ZClasses. I basically copied the structure from ListMate,
so it's probably not the best design possible for ZPatterns. So (1) may not
be possible with the current code.

Itamar, thanks for your suggestions on this. I never got it working.
Frustrated by a period of intense Zope Developer Pain I fell back
on.. you've guessed it.. my favorite hammer.

For this application I found that a zwiki page containing a CSV table
makes a micro-db that's relatively easy to administer work with (and
it's almost editable with MS Excel). I made a support method for doing
queries: http://zwiki.org/QueryCsv

Question for the list: is this nuts ? I somehow doubt it would pass
the ACID test, but zope's transactions help and at least for this app
(small data, low load, mostly appending) it seems to have worked well.

I think it needs an image content-type ?

Sorry, just my flaky link. For shame, to think such a thing.

My two cents on the screenshot:

- looks like good progress!

- the top bar as shown definitely doesn't make best use of my precious
screen space, should become a user option

- for what it's worth I too spend most of my time in manage_main to
avoid frames confusion

- agree with Andy's point about many shades of blue

- I think the black might grow on me

- stating-the-obvious: a centralized stylesheet and more user
preferences for all management pages would be good
