Zope is said to capable of a million hits per day on commodity hardware, yet zope.org receives only about 20% of that on its busiest days. This would not be remarkable except that the response times from zope.org seem to usually be 10 seconds or so. I am on a T-1 line and 13 hops and 80ms from the zope.org server. My current tracking shows that zope.org is pretty snappy until the server gets attacked from a bunch of spiders. Because zope.org has a huge quantity of pages (500+MB of (packed) content and climbing), and because objects get loaded into ram as they get accessed, accessing *everything* on the site multiple times causes zope to load things in out a lot, causing it to slow down. IOW, if you have a zope running with, say, 100 mb of content (that's 2048 50 kb pages) on a box with, say 256mb of ram, and you have your caching policy set very liberally, then you should be able to hit 30 requests per second, or 2.5 million hits per day. Zope.org will be on hardware that stretches the notion of "commodity" soon, but it will be sufficient such that all 500mb of our objects can be floating about in ram if need be. [Zope] Zope Hotfix: ObjectManager subscripting
This hotfix addresses an important security issue that affects Zope versions up to and including Zope 2.2.2. The issue involves the fact that the 'subscript notation' that can be used to access items of ObjectManagers (Folders) did not correctly restrict return values to only actual sub items. This made it possible to access names that should be private from DTML (objects with names beginning with the underscore '_' character). This could allow DTML authors to see private implementation data structures and in certain cases possibly call methods that they shouldn't have access to from DTML. While we know of no instances of this issue being used to exploit a site, we recommend that any Zope 2.2.x site that allows DTML to be edited by untrusted users apply this Hotfix. http://www.zope.org/Products/Zope/Hotfix_2000-10-11/Hotfix_2000-10-11.tgz The hotfix will work for all versions of Zope 2.2.0 and higher. [Zope] super cannot do
Chris McDonough wrote: On Tue, 5 Sep 2000, Evan Simpson wrote: I've got to say I agree with you here. I'm still not 100% sure why the superuser or bootstrap user can't own anything. It's due to a combination of the trojan horse issue and the sticky authentication issue, I think. You really don't want to be authenticated as super very often, because while you are, if you visit a page someone else wrote, they can make your browser do evil things to your site. This is also true of Managers, but less so. Similarly, a page owned by non-super has tighter permissions than one owned by the super would. Yes... the PDG security chapter has all of this in it, but it would seem that neither Chris W or I are completely satisfied by these answers. :-) It seems a matter of diminishing returns, especially when newbies hit the wall during install, since we haven't provided them with an airbag yet. I think this is exlusively because as of 2.2.1 objects execute according to their ownership, not according to the permissions of the AUTHENTICATED_USER. Because of the widespread security implications of letting an object that can be called by anyone have superuser permissions (which was not possible under the prior regime), superuser can no longer own. You can still get superuser-esque behavior by doing something in external methods or some other mechanism that bypasses the security machinery. -- ethan mindlace fremen Zopatista Community Liason Abnegate I! ___ Zope maillist - [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope ** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** (Related lists - http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev )

[Zope] The Ascetic Superuser

It used to be considered okay before Zope 2.2, so was has been changed/discovered that makes this now such a bad idea that despite loads of newbie pain and confusion, it's still worth while/necessary? Objects used to execute according to the permissions of the AUTHENTICATED_USER or the proxy role. "Ownership" only applied (for execution purposes) if you explicitly set the proxy role to "Owner". This was a Very Bad Thing (tm) because once you authenticated as superuser you could view a random HTML page on the web/in your inbox that had a little javascript thingy that went and wiped out your entire site or insert maliciousness here Now every object excecutes according to the permision of the owner, *not* the viewer. It can also run as a proxy role. The super-bootstrap-user lives outside of "normal" zope authentication has permission to do anything save that which NotEvenGodShouldDo. Therefore, it shouldn't own objects. This is *quite* important, and needs to stay. I don't know how to emphasize enough that this is a well thought out correction to an extremely deadly class of security problems that still (afaik) plagues many "other" through-the-web management systems. The newbie pain, however, could probably be mitigated- don't call it a Super user, since it hardly deserves the S or the cape. Have a user in the default install. Something like that. I need to have n versions for various testing purposes: this is what got me in trouble in the first place- I was packing to try to make room. The pack makes a full backup of your data, so it needs about 1.75*n space where n is the size of your current Data.fs Also, (besides "upgrade to alpha"), what is the workaround for Data.fs bigger than 2GB? Are there any plans to split it across multiple files? (Once again, the PostgreSQL people recently added this -- database files don't exceed 1GB, when the table gets that big it splits them across multiple files). One solution is to have your Data.fs actually be split using mounted databases, something I consider a sub-optimal solution. Another option would be to store the entire zodb in a relational database, but as far as I know none of the products that attempt to provide that are full-featured. The bottom line is that the OS should support the creation of very large files. Note that any of the BSD variants, or Solaris for x86, or SCO unix, all will let you have a ZODB larger than 2gb, assuming python was compiled properly. I have spent literally about 40 hours trying to get Linux to support large files. While the code is integrated into kernels 2.3.27 and up, something still isn't quite right because I cannot get python to support large files although I can get c to create 17GB files using lseek(). Zope is going to be at the conference in force, with: - Paul "opening eyes to the Zope-Mozilla initiative", http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/e_sess/853 - Ryan telling the world "you can have web IMAP and collaboration", http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/e_sess/725 - Christopher, as always, concentrating on the "edification of the community", http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/w/python_tutorials.html Documentation -- by Amos Lattier This Week * We've released the Docs Wiki http://www.zope.org/Wikis/Docs This is your source for information on official Zope documentation. You can find out about all our projects including their status and timelines. You can also see what Amos, Michel and Stephan are doing each week. Plus, since it's a wiki you can add your comments. * The bulk of this week's work will be spent trying to get the online docs ship shape for Zope 2.2 final. Mike is finishing up the API docs, Amos is working on the help system framework and tutorial and Stephan is working on the management help content. * Mike is working with O'Reilly this week to clarify the status of his book. If all goes well we should have a definitive answer on making it official Zope documentation by the end of the week. Next Week * Next week will be spent finishing any bits that need finalizing for Zope 2.2 that we don't finish this week. * Hopefully next week we can begin making Mike's book public. Zope Status -- by Brian Lloyd Summary We finally beat the todo list and got the 2.2 beta 1 release "out the door", http://www.zope.org/Products/Zope/2.2.0b1 (and there was much rejoicing!). Last week highlights 7 more collector issues were closed last week, and the remaining items on the todo list for 2.2 beta 1 were knocked out. The needed hooks for non-invasive virtual hosting support were added, as well as better Undo handling, several catalog fixes and some long overdue fixes to the way that HTTP HEAD requests are handled that should make Zope more friendly to various spidering tools. This week's good-buddies-of-the-core: o Chris Withers and others for forcing some action on the HEAD issue o Toby Dickenson and Butch Landingin contributed fixes for ZCatalog o taz sent a patch to un-screw what I screwed up last time I worked on MailHost :^) Next week Next week we'll be absorbing feedback on the beta release and planning for final. More importantly, work will begin in earnest on the "opening the development process" initiative. I hope to get a basic "Zope core development"- focused area set up, publish the draft Zope roadmap for comment and start working out some post-2.2 plans. This week in the PTK Community -- by Tres Seaver * David Brown, author of "Zope Fish":http://zopefish.weblogs.com/ZopeFishRelease, agreed to join TeamPTK. Help! Hmm. superuser can't manage the folders? They should be able to. I assume you mean by "almost works" it doesn't let you manage? First, you can always disable siteaccess by using __no_before_traverse__ as the first item in the path. Second, once you set this up, you cannot manage the folder except from it's url ( host1.penguinpowered.com/manage should work) These are kind of stabs in the dark. If you could show me some urls that don't work, then maybe I can do some more. Re: [Zope] WorldPilot - Regular messages are attachments? (PatchFix)
Bryan Stillwell wrote: Ok, I fixed the problem with files trying to be saved as ATT0001.DAT, but they're still messed up in Mozilla (which your using, right ethan?) where they save as getpart (I think this is a Mozilla bug, and not a WorldPilot bug). I also fixed the bug where if it's an image (jpeg, gif, etc.) it gets displayed instead of downloaded. I've attached the patch which fixes both of these problems. Ah, mozilla. I can deal with getpart. I also have new RPMs of WorldPilot that has all of my patches applied so far here: http://www.verinet.com/~arcane/worldpilot/ Wow, thanks for the patches then packaging them, brian! ~ethan ___ Zope maillist - [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope ** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** (Related lists - http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev )
[Zope-dev] package descriptions
Zopatistas! I have recently changed the product page at http://www.zope.org/Products . If you would be so kind as to change your product description so that the first line contains a meaningful description of your product in plain text, I would appreciate it.
