Did you build the exact same type of Zope (version, python, etc) with all
the products?

Have you run the utilities on your ZODB to make sure it is ok?

Is anybody out there reading this list? Third question today, no
responses, and boy am I in trouble. I went to backup my server's working
HD on my new .5 teraflop HD and for some reason that wiped out the /var
dirs in my Zope instances. I have backups of the Data.fs that aren't too
old, but for some reason I can't get a working copy of Zope installed! I
follow the tar, configure, make, make install, make instance without
throwing anything special at the configure, then I edit zope.conf to enter
the correct effective-user, but when I go to runzope, it throws a
cPersistence error. Well, I yahoo'd that and found out I had to run
python setup.py build_ext -if to knock it out. But why should I have to
do that at all? That's not standard procedure. Anyway, I got past that
point, but now when I try runzope I get the error that follows. And I've
tried every way I can think of to get around it. All the permissions are
correct. Once I actually got to the point where it said Zope
was ready to serve, could surf to the 111.222.333.444:8080 page, but try
to get into the manage page and it won't accept my username/password. I
ran zpasswd.py and still couldn't get in! Guys, I'm exhausted. I've been
at this for 10 hours! Any help would really be appreciated.

Re: [Zope] Re: Improved Zope Org Proposal

2006-06-27 Thread Jake
Zope.org is becoming a worse and worse face of Zope.

If anyone were to ask me about Zope at this point, I would point them to
Plone.org which not only has more relevant data, better searches, better
organization but, of course, looks good.

Just my personal opinion, but if Zope Corp is going to use the namesake of
Zope they should also take on Zope.org as a full responsibility, meaning
all aspects with someone who is a full time Zope.org person.

 Hey David,

Cool, thanks so much for volunteering to provide all the resources,

 problems that entails.

Oh? What's that? You weren't volunteering?

Personally I have not visited zope.org for a few years for anything
other than releases. And I am a long time pro developer.

It seems pretty obvious these days that having a one-shop zope.org site
is too ambitious. Perhaps even wrong guided.

I wouldn't even know what should be on it. Zope 2 development mostly
means Plone these days. Plone has a great site already, so no reason to
 do to much about that.

Pure Zope 3 is in even less use than pure Zope 2.

The exciting stuff is going on in Five and 2-3 integration. But why the
heck make a site about that?

You could say that zope has been beaten by its own success.

The only sensible approach I can see is to make a new zope.org with
releases, installation guides etc. It should also showcases the great
cms/applications that are build on top of it. With links to those sites.

On those individual sites there are lots of documentation, product
 releases programming tricks etc.

Eg. I develop in Plone, and practically all I knew about programming in
pure Zope 2 is useless now that I am using UML/AT/AGX in Plone. It's
like assembly language to a python programmer. I assume that it is the
 same for other frameworks.

Having a 'Products' section on zope.org probably doesn't even make sense
anymore. It is simply to low level.

Drop all the old documentation and move it to old.zope.org. Just in
cases there is a nugget somewhere.

The term high traffic site doesn't mean a thing when it comes to
threads or the cache (or in general). It's way too general.
Determinations about cache sizes or thread numbers can only be made
with specific requirements, (estimated) traffic data, hardware
specifications and knowledge about the Zope application in hand, period.

Less threads and bigger caches only make sense when you are under
memory pressure and (hopefully) your pages render fast enough so that
less threads can still satisfy the rendering load.

Such a table is pretty much worthless. A ZEO cache of 50.000 objects tells
you nothing about the RAM to be used. The cache could hold 50.000 small
objects or 50.000 very large objects eating all your RAM. The relation
between #threads and hits also depends very much on your application.
To make it short: dealing with larger installation always requires some
iterations of oberserving your system and tuning it.

Am I gleaming from that that you are proposing a less-is-more approach to
threads?

Here is what I have been using:
- Zope 2.7.8 (Plone 2.1.2)
- RH Linux
- AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0 GHz
- 2GB DDR RAM
- 120,000 hits a day
- 392,036 objects in database
- 2 threads
- 100,000 object cache size

This seems to eat up about half of the RAM on the server.

Would one thread but double the cache size do better?

That article contains little information to back up the conclusions,
and some of it is patently wrong. Another case of hearsay and half-
thruths being propagated by well-meaning but uninformed parties.

There is a convincing example (I think from Matt Kromer) what
happens to mean response time when the number of threads
is increased from 1 to 2:

Assume you have 2 units of work. If you have a single
thread, 1 unit is done, then the second. The
   mean response time is (1 + 2) / 2 = 1.5.

Now assume you have two threads (but a single processor).
Both threads work (quasi) parallel but have only half of the
processor power. Both will take 2 time units to perform
   their unit of work. The mean response time is (2 + 2) / 2 = 2.

You get the same ratios whenever you double the number of threads
(but keep the number of processors and all your work is CPU bound).

Things become more difficult when you have a mix of very small
requests and very long requests. You then may want a higher
level of concurrency to not let the small requests being
 blocked by the long ones.

If it is fairly extensive I would think your best bet is to migrate up
the 2.X ladder.

2.6 - 2.7.8 (shouldn't be too bumpy)
2.7.8 - 2.8.4 (ZCatalog issues)
2.8.4 - 2.9.x (lots of Zope 3 goodness)

If you do those the jump into Zope 3 should be easier than not.

  Zope: 2.7.4, CMF 1.4.7, Plone 2.0.5

What did you gather that information with? Just parsing the log files?

 Anyway, here's ours:

 Pages: 2.9 million (approx)
Hardward: Xeon 2.4GHz (HTT disabled), 2GB RAM, FreeBSD 6.0, single
 SCSI-320
 drive.
Zope: 8 instances of 2.7.8, hanging off a single ZEO server, and

 machine.

I don't have complete stats for the whole year, but from Feb 2005 to today
 we
 did:

 Hits: 23,359,722
 Pages: 10,977,747
Peak rate: 18,998 hits per hour
Setup: 2 dual AMD Opteron 244 machines, 2GB RAM, Debian, with
pydirector load-balancing them and apache out the front with the
vhost mappings (we have a bazillion vhosts). One machine is also ZEO
server with lotsa RAID disk, the other is just a grunt box with
  CPU, RAM and little else.
 Zope: 2.7.6

We have five ZEO clients (one per CPU plus an extra). One of them is
 dedicated
to serving search-engine bot traffic so that the other clients (and hence
regular users) aren't affected when they decide to spider *all* of our
 vhosts
at once. Which they do, on a regular basis. Currently we see the majority
 of
our traffic handled by the first of the other four ZEO clients, but at
 peak
load times the others two see a trickle of hits. I expect we could double
 the
current load, and we are anticipating an increase in load this year of at
least that. It's a good thing that dual-Opteron machines are cheap.

I think 'app' in your case is Zope.app (from Zope import app). You
prolly

also have a 'root' object then; modify the above to read:

obj = root._p_jar['\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x04\x9d#']

and you should be fine.

[Zope] Finding and killing the POSKeyError in ZODB

2005-09-03 Thread Jake
I have been reading the instructions in ZopeLabs trying to figure out
how to get rid of a few POSKeyErrors, but I can't get by this one point.

http://zopelabs.com/cookbook/1054240694

Now that we have an OID, let's resolve that to the actual object
like so:

 app._p_jar[oid]

Once you have the object, you can start getting clues about it. It's not
acquisition-wrapped so you can't easily find out its containment path,
but you can find out its ID, mod time, type, and owner, like so:

I get:

 obj = app._p_jar['\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x04\x9d#']
Traceback (most recent call last):
File stdin, line 1, in ?

Download and install Plone which comes with a great set of templates and

There are also numerous books.

As for seeing someones code, most of the layout is in the XHTML/CSS but

Re: [Zope] Problem with AdManager

How are calling the ads, as I don't think you need these two calls in a
normal ad display.

URL: /advert_chooser/manage_main
URL: /site/advertisements/show_banner/manage_main

Also: Try turning off count views and maybe count clicks and see if it
does the same thing. It might be that Zope can't write to the ZODB that
fast, although I run AdManager on about 10 sites in one Zope install that
gets 20,000+ views (page) a day with no problems.

Re: [Zope] Question regarding changing Zope site to another distro

2005-04-22 Thread Jake
Hi Mario,

This is my system for upgrading:
http://zopezone.com/faq/1063992383

I have moved my Zope installation more than a few times from server to
server and here are the basics.

- Get the new installation up and running first, just plain Zope/Plone/CMF
etc. You might want to start with a newer version as it is a good time to
upgrade but that is up to you, more work, bigger payout.

- Copy over the /Products/ (or the ones that you didn't already install)
and restart Zope. Check for errors.

- Copy over the Data.fs, repeat.

Finally, make sure to grab all the logs etc.

That is to go from a old zope version to a new one.

If you just want to transfer it, shut it down, zip it up and unzip it in
the same location. I have never found this to work very well though. You
will have to edit the config and start files to make sure they are
pointing at the new locations.

The other way to do it, would be to try the first method but use the exact
same versions. So, just install the same versions in a normal manner, and
copy over Products and Data.fs.

Good luck (this is why I try only to do it a few times a year).

 Hi,

 I run this Zope/Plone site - www.dte.ua.pt
I am no Zope guru. I've just managed, with my years on administrating
Linux servers, to install it, as well as plone and a bunch of Products,
and get it running. That's all.
Just made after, a few hacks in Plone code, mainly to support
authentication through HTTPS and a few more minor thingies.

The server running Zope has been there for about three years (more or
less), is running SuSE 9.0 and it was compiled as well as Pyhton.

The latest versions of Zope and Python, were by that time 2.6.1 and
 2.1.3 respectively.

So, to live on the edge, i've instaled this versions under:
 /usr/local/zope
 and
 /usr/local/python

 I start zope with:
 /usr/local/zope/start

and in /usr/local/zope/start file, i have
 exec /usr/local/python/bin/python $cwd/z2.py -L 'pt_PT' -u zope $@

I'm moving this machine to a more powerful one in which i'm going to
install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.

I remeber having installed it first in RedHat 9, and then switching it
after a few days to SuSE 9.0, just by backing up /usr/local/zope
directory and restoring it after in SuSE.
 No major issues with this.
A couple of symbolic links did to tweaks that were needed.

 Now...
I think my Zope is suffering from arthritis :(
I can't undo any more, either in Zope nor Plone and i can't compress
Zope's database without getting an error and... no database compressed.
As if you care to rapidly browse the site, you will see it is indeed a
small one, but the /usr/local/zope .bz2 tarball is already at 1 GB and
 increasing.

Does this sympthoms means that i'm going to have troubles now migrating
 to RHEL 4 ?
Maintaining the Zope and Python version of course and the same scheme.
I don't want to upgrade Zope, nor Python, nor Plone.

 Any help would be apreciated.

Until the documentation has caught up to the new features, it seems a bit

data from those products into other vehicles but such is progress.

ZClasses are a feature that support through-the-web development.
Many people have found them useful in the past, but they have some
 significant deficiencies, including:

 - They can't be managed with file-system tools, especially
revision control systems like CVS and subversion.

 - They don't work well with Python development tools, like
profilers and debugger.

 - They aren't being actively maintained.

Most serious Zope developers stopped using them a long time
ago and are frustrated that we still expend resources keeping them
around. For example, the release of Zope 2.8 has been delayed
by the requirement of getting ZClasses working with Zope 2.8.

We could choose to deprecate ZClasses. If we deprecated them in
Zope 2.8, they would still work in Zope 2.8 and Zope 2.9, but
their support would be removed in Zope 2.10. Would anyone be upset
 if this happened?

My vote is to keep them around for 2.8 and 2.9 but say goodbye after that.

Again.. it won't be easy for us, but who said progress ever was.

A decision hasn't been made. People who don't use them feel strongly

My question, since it now seems like I am not the only one using ZClasses
is, why not support them? You listed out the reasons why someone wouldn't
want to use them going forward, but what are the reasons why not to
support them as legacy into 3/2.10?

We use ZClasses for several applications which we would (if possible)
 not like to rewrite.

[Zope] Mirroring to IIS

2000-07-10 Thread Jake LeBeau

Hello all,

I'm attempting to mirror our Zope site to IIS 5.0 on a W2K Server, and am having
problems with Netscape Navigator. Because the files have no file extension, Netscape
keeps trying to download and save the files to disk, rather than displaying the
content as HTML. I've tried several ways of specifying that the MIME content type
header coming from the server is "text/html", but nothing alters the behavior of
Netscape. Is there anyone else out there who may have had experience with this and
would be willing to help? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Re: [Zope] Mirroring to IIS

2000-07-10 Thread Jake LeBeau

LOL Good catch, I was just about to e-mail more questions ;-)

I've been banging my head on it for most of the day, and I think what it comes down to
is - why does netscape have no problem displaying pages from ZServer that have no file
extension, and yet try to save all files from IIS that don't have a file extension?
I think it is because ZServer correctly sends the appropriate MIME type along with
each file. IIS doesn't. Apparently IIS sends files without extensions as an
"application/octet-stream" content-type. I've tried changing this in IIS by changing
the ".*" MIME mapping, but to no avail. I'm afraid I'm getting far afield from the
topic of Zope and need to address this to some IIS list or other :-P

Thanks for your help, though

Oops of course you are mirroring to a static file that setting a header will
do no good. Damn need more tea to wake me up.

I did a similar thing and when I mirrored it to IIS as static files I
changed the filename by adding .html

You can fix the header to always add the correct content type
 (RESPONSE.setHeader('Content-Type', 'text/html'))

Hi Maik,

I've been trying to use the ZMirror product and wget with varying degrees of success.
See my response to Andy McKay for a description of where I am now.

Of course, if I was a real Zopista, instead of a newbie, I would rewrite the ZMirror
product to assign file extensions to its output, right?

Thanks for your help,

Try using a mirror tool like w3mir. Folders like http://localhost/w3mir/ will be
mirrored
to a folder:

w3mir/

and an index.html file inside:

w3mir/index.html

Hope this helps.

[Zope] Z ODBC and W2K

2000-06-14 Thread Jake LeBeau

Hello all,
I'm trying to install the Z ODBC DA product on Windows 2000 Server. I placed the
.tar into the top level directory of my Zope installation, but when I restarted the
service, the product did not install. I also tried starting Zope with the .bat file,
but with the same results. So I copied the installed product from another (working NT)
Zope installation onto the W2K server, and while it does make the product available,
the link to the icon is broken, and the db connection doesn't work either. Does anyone
know how I can get this to work?
TIA,
Jake LeBeau [EMAIL PROTECTED]
