[Zope] Hardware minimum for development
Hallo, what's the minimum of hardware to develop Zope-sites(only for development). I'd like to know because I want to buy a laptop and don't want to spend much money ! Thanks. ___ Zope maillist - [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope ** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** (Related lists - http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev )

It's because I'm working on one machine - Zope, X-Window, Netscape with few windows open, sometimes Apache and Gimp are running together. I'm satisfied with my CPU - k6-2/300MHz is sufficient for me. I'm going to buy some memory in few next days, I think additional 32MB will be enough. Hallo, what's the minimum of hardware to develop Zope-sites(only for development). I'd like to know because I want to buy a laptop and don't want to spend much money ! Thanks. I use an old toshiba 325 cds (cd broken) (460 bogomips) w/ 48Mb of ram running Linux as both my desktop and portable machine for all sorts of development (Including Zope). Works fine as a desktop machine. Kind of a pain to plug/unplug the cables all the time. I can run a couple of zopes, pgsql, heck I even had Oracle on it for a while. You might need a bit more oomph for java development. The problem with the laptop is probably not the CPU/ram (well, get 64MB ram if you can) but the screen resolution and the pointer. Zope at 600x800 is tight. The little eraser-head pointer is a pain, and Zope development tends to need a lot of mouse action. I usually carry along a mouse. Even on the desktop (i.e with a monitor and keyboard plugged in) I am limited to 1024x768 8-bit color with a bad refresh rate. -- cary ___ Zope maillist - [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope ** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** (Related lists - http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev )

You did say development, right? I'm running a personal Zope installation (not by choice, but by reason of poverty) on a 486-DX, 66mhz, 16 megs of RAM, with SuSE 6.4 Linux. It works fine, (no, really!) but I sure wouldn't put a load on it. Only about twenty other people even know about it/use it sporadically, so that hasn't been a problem. jb --- Jonathan Broad DoITNET Webadmin--- ---Resource Center Librarian "For a list of the ways which technology has failed to improve our quality of life, press 3." ___ Zope maillist - [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope ** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** (Related lists - http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev )

I used to run out of RAM all the time when developing in Zope via Netscape. It's partly due to Netscape having some huge gaping memory leaks. I have, however, discovered how to avoid it. I discovered quite by accident one day, that if you disable JavaScript, it doesn't happen. Just thought this might save you the cost of memory, which is prohibitive these days. I'm satisfied with my CPU - k6-2/300MHz is sufficient for me. I'm going to buy some memory in few next days, I think additional 32MB will be enough.
