Usually, you simply use

dtml-let variable=documentname

You need the "_[...]" only, if either:

  *  "..." is not a valid Python name

  *  "..." is a Python expression

now, when you say "documentname(...)"  do you mean   "documentname(_.None, _ 
)" ?
