With the merge of branch lp:~zorba-coders/zorba/ft-base64Binary, there exists a much more efficient implementation of the xs:base64Binary type. It allows base64 items to be streamed and no unnecessary encoding is done.
However, the implementation of the Base64 class is still very inefficient.
