THIS WEEK'S NEW DATABASE TIPS

WHO IS LOW ON SPACE? | Michael Vergara
http://www.searchDatabase.com/tip/1,289483,sid13_gci778766,00.html
This large script summarizes the tablespaces in a Oracle database
instance, highlights the one(s) that cannot throw another extent, and
details all datafiles in the database. It also creates a script that
you can use in an emergency to adjust the next extent parameters of
all of the objects that are in danger.

IMPROVED PERFORMANCE WITH DATABASE LINKS | Colin Ling
http://www.searchDatabase.com/tip/1,289483,sid13_gci778755,00.html
If your Oracle database is distributed across a few servers and you
need to access the database across these servers, one way to improve
performance is through the use of database links. A PL/SQL script
that inserts records across multiple servers using database links.

CONVERT XLS DATA TO A SQL SERVER TABLE | Geert Vandenbroucke
http://www.searchDatabase.com/tip/1,289483,sid13_gci778979,00.html
When you import an Excel table into SQL Server you wind up with a
table with all the columns from the Excel table as fields and all the
rows as records. However, in a RDBMS you normally want a table with
three fields: row, col, and value. To do the conversion, Geert
created a stored procedure without any cursors.

And a few bonus quickies:

CHANGING THE DATE AND TIME IN SQL SERVER USING T-SQL | Eli Leiba

REPLACE NULL VALUES | Akram Tri
http://www.searchDatabase.com/tip/1,289483,sid13_gci779000,00.html

CONVERTING NUMBERS INTO CHARACTERS | Aluri Ramakrishna

MORE RECENT TIPS FROM SEARCHDATABASE MEMBERS

DISPLAY DETAILED INDEX STATISTICS | Cade Bryant
http://www.searchDatabase.com/tip/1,289483,sid13_gci777577,00.html
Index tuning in Microsoft SQL Server isn't rocket science...It's
much, much harder! Here's a simple stored procedure I created called
sp_indexstats that allows you to obtain detailed DBCC SHOW_STATISTICS
information on all indexes for a given table.

WORKING WITH DELIMITED STRINGS IN T-SQL | Harinatha Reddy Gorla
http://www.searchDatabase.com/tip/1,289483,sid13_gci777587,00.html
Two examples of how to deal with the problems that you may face while
working with strings in T-SQL: Finding the count of words in a
comma-delimited string, and parsing the delimited string.

USING "INITCAP" IN ORACLE AND SQL SERVER | Paul Webster
http://www.searchDatabase.com/tip/1,289483,sid13_gci777599,00.html
A well-annotated stored procedure demonstrating how to use the Oracle
funciton INITCAP. Showing his versatility, Paul has also written the
equivalent stored procedure for SQL Server!

CHECK FOR ORACLE AVAILABILITY AND TABLESPACE CAPACITY | Rick Stehno
http://www.searchDatabase.com/tip/1,289483,sid13_gci777604,00.html
A script that will check if all of Oracle instances are up, if any of
the extents have reached their maximum limit, and if any of the
tablespaces are running short of freespace.

GENERATING MAILING LABELS IN ORACLE | Mark Morseth-Mayer
http://www.searchDatabase.com/tip/1,289483,sid13_gci777632,00.html
An Oracle script that generates mailing labels and mail merge lists
to contact individuals or companies. Easily modifiable for your
specific needs.
