 From the Editor:

by Tim DiChiara, Site Editor

As I wrote last week, the amount of data being compiled by the typical corporation is growing exponentially, with terabyte-sized data warehouses becoming increasingly common and petabyte-sized systems right around the corner. However, as data mining pioneer Usama Fayyad has noted, "In many companies, 'data warehouses' are actually 'data tombs': the data goes in and are never looked at again." The value of all this data lies in finding meaningful -- and potentially profitable -- patterns hidden in it.

To help you understand the infrastructure needed to explore and analyze your data, we have an exciting event for you this week. At 2 pm EST (19:00 GMT) today, "the father of data warehousing" Bill Inmon makes a return visit to searchDatabase to discuss Exploration Processing and Data Mining. Today's discussion includes a live presentation, followed by a real-time Q&A session, so don't miss your chance to interact with a true industry leader.

A final note: my call for predictions about future database industry trends last week was underwhelming to say the least. You're all laboring in the database trenches, so I'd really like to hear what you think! Click on over to our DBA Water Cooler forum, find the thread called "Data management trends for 2002," and add your two cents.

Till next time, Tim

>> Reusing user tablespaces?
Member "dhawal" asks: "Is it possible to reuse the tablespace of one Oracle database in another database?" Go to our "DBA Water Cooler" forum to help him out.

>> "SqlState of 37000" error?
Sarah has written some C++ code that connects the SQL Server through an ODBC connection using SQLConnect API. Why doesn't the SQL API know that the server she's trying to connect to is offline till she executes SQLExecDirect and it returns the error "SqlState of 37000"? Can anybody offer any advice in our "DBA Water Cooler" forum?

Tip of the Week:
In many situations, an Oracle DBA is required to monitor the space allocations on many databases. A great deal of time may be spent in executing the commands to ascertain the current amount of the allocated space. The scripts provided here will allow tracking of growth for an Oracle database and flag possible error conditions before they occur. Additionally, the data can be reported as statistics to keep management informed of growth, plot expected growth and document the requirement to obtain additional storage hardware.
