Performance tuning is perennial favorite topic among searchDatabase.com members, for good reason: it's one of the major responsibilities of a DBA. The Oracle RDBMS is obviously a very sophisticated, highly flexible, and eminently tunable product. There are a myriad of tuning methods and scripts out there, but they all have two basic goals: decrease the time end-users spend waiting for a response (in decision support applications), and maximize throughput (in OLTP systems). In both these cases, poor Oracle performance ultimately translates into decreased productivity and thus money down the drain. I can already hear the DBA's protesting: But wait! We aren't the only ones who have a role in tuning! Yes, it's true: multiple groups of people in the organization must cooperate and communicate to achieve maximal performance. Business execs must clearly define business rules. Application designers must avoid performance bottlenecks. Developers must implement efficient SQL statements. And, of course, the DBA must monitor and correct problems with system performance. Then there are the network admins, and the.... Wouldn't it be easier if Oracle tuned itself? That is the precisely the goal that the company is striving toward. In 9i, self-tuning is becoming easier and more effective than ever before. This week, searchDatabase is presenting an excellent opportunity to pose your Oracle self-tuning questions to one of the world's top Oracle experts. Don Burleson has more than 20 years of full-time DBA experience, has written a dozen books -- including Oracle high-performance SQL tuning -- published more than 60 articles in national magazines, serves as Editor-in-Chief of Oracle Internals magazine, and is owner of BEI Oracle Consulting. Join us on Wednesday, Feb. 27 for what's sure to be an educational event! Till next time, Tim DiChiara, Editor |

Migrate queries from Access to MySQL Member "Tsi Lok" has been trying to migrate his database from Access 97 to MySQL. Since MySQL doesn't have stored procedures, is it possible to to store the Access queries in MySQL? Go to our "Database-web connectivity" forum if you can lend Tsi Lok a hand. |

SQL Server 2000 RAID set Member "Karthik" is using SQL Server 2000 on Win2000, with two I/O controllers with dual bus (channel). He wants to know if the data sets transferred will be split across two channels (in a controller) in a balanced way to get a maximum throughput. Any help out there? If so, go to our "Database-web connectivity" forum. |

| This SQL Server batch file demonstrates the power of both OSQL and Windows command extensions. It is used to calculate the size of user tables -- very useful in big databases. |
