Our Featured Topic this week on stored procedure
development (below) raises the
perennial issue of the conflict between application
developers and database
administrators. We're preparing an article on this very
subject, so I'd love to hear your
thoughts on questions such as:
- Who designs, debugs, implements, and maintains stored
procedures, triggers, and user-defined functions in your
organization: the DBA, the developer or both?
- Is there increasing overlap between the job duties of
the DBA and the developer?
- How do you perceive the hierarchy of the two groups: Is
the DBA in charge, mentoring the hapless developer? Or does
the DBA *think* he/she's in charge, when actually the
developer is the brains of the outfit?
- What are the main points of contention: Performance
tuning? Security? Design? Lack of a clear project
scope?
- Do these issues cause friction between the two groups,
or is your IT department just one big, happy family?
Let me know your thoughts in our DBA Water Cooler forum or e-mail me
personally at [EMAIL PROTECTED]. Thanks!
Till next time, Tim DiChiara, Editor

| Tip of the Week: |
| In this month's column, Fabian Pascal tackles
some thorny questions asked during his "Live Expert Q&A" on
SearchDatabase last December. Read his typically irascible
responses and forceful arguments on topics such as: The
difference between logical and business models;
denormalization and performance; the lack of full
normalization technology among database vendors; integrity
constraints and SQL DBMS's; normalization and data warehouses; and Fabian's favorite RDBMS! |
