Looks like we have quite a few database gods in our membership.
Last week, I listed three Oracle and SQL Server questions that even our esteemed panel of SearchDatbase experts had some trouble answering. I mentioned that if anyone could answer these questions, I'd officially declare them a database god. Well, I hereby anoint the following gurus: Karl Greenwood, Arne Andersen, Massimo Bigliardo, Chris Gait, Adric McDowell, Jeffrey Toth, James Neofotistos, Frank Pantaleo, Terry Catt, and David Hultin. Bow down before them! Of course, after I threw down the proverbial gauntlet, our experts regrouped and came up with some excellent solutions themselves. "Stumped indeed," they scoffed! I've posted all your answers in this article. Looks like there is no problem too tough for the "group mind" to solve...
Speaking of the talents of SearchDatabase members, following my Note from the Editor a few weeks ago, many of you offered your thoughtful opinions and experiences about the perennial unease between DBAs and developers. My assistant editor Sara Cushman and I compiled your "bon mots" in this article. Check it out! Thanks again everyone for sharing your thoughts. If you'd
still like to add your two cents, click on over to our DBA Water Cooler forum. I think we can all agree that what should unite the two sides is the need to design and maintain stable, fast, and secure databases for our organizations. The modern DBMS is just too complex to be tamed by one individual!

| Tip of the Week: |
| Since String objects are immutable, the
creators of Java included the
StringBuffer class in the core Java API. The StringBuffer
class is a class that acts as a buffer for the creation and manipulation of dynamic strings. Learn how to properly use the StringBuffer class and how it will dramatically improve the performance of your Oracle Java apps. |
