I'm sure all you faithful SearchDatabase members know, we hold our famous Tip Contest each month. If you haven't participated in it yet, why not give it a try?

You don't need to be a Ph.D. or a super-guru to submit a tip. The majority of our most highly-rated tips are simple shortcuts that help get specific jobs done faster and better. You've all learned little workarounds that help you; the Tip Exchange is where Oracle, SQL Server, and DB2 practitioners come together to share these hints. Sure, we receive submissions from database gods like Joe Celko, but us mere mortals can just think of something that helps you work more effectively and that could help others, too. You just might win our new July prize, a very cool Garmin eTrex Global Positioning System (a $115 value). Submit your Oracle, SQL Server, or DB2 tips today!

Congratulations to Harinatha Reddy Gorla, winner of June's tip prize! He will receive a set of Boston Acoustics Multimedia Computer Speakers and will be inducted into our Hall of Fame for his SQL Server tip, Replacing non-alphanumeric characters in strings using T-SQL. Congrats also to our runner-up Guillaume Henon for his Oracle tip Monitoring daily archive log switches: Number, size and frequency.

Here is a selection of some previous winners:

One final note: Our mailbox is always packed with great Oracle and SQL Server tips but you DB2 users out there are a bit bashful! So come on you DB2 DBAs and developers, share your knowledge!

Till next time, Tim DiChiara, Editor

>> SQL Server stored procedures in Access?

Member "Alex" is trying to run a SQL Server stored procedure through Access, but can't get it to work. Go to our "DBA Water Cooler" forum if you can offer any advice.

>> Access via Flash

Member "athena" is still waiting for help! She has built a Flash front-end that uses an ASP page to connect to an Access database and retrieve some variables. However, she is getting a "parameter is incorrect" error. Go to our "Database-web connectivity" forum if you can help "athena" figure out the problem.

Tip of the Week:
The latest provocative edition of Fabian Pascal's "Against the Grain" column. Fabian writes: "The vast majority of practitioners, who are self-taught, lack an adequate fundamental education, have been working with such unnecessarily complex technologies and products and employing such unnecessarily complex practices, that they can't cope with simplicity anymore: when something is simple, they must complicate it before they're comfortable with it."
>> As simple as possible, but not simpler
