The database trade show industry, take note: there is discontent in the ranks.
My non-scientific survey of opinions about database conferences showed little praise and a lot of grumbling. Here is a sampling of our members' feedback:
- Trade shows cost too much for too little content: "Vendor and product information is available more productively and concisely in other forms. The speakers rarely reveal anything of value -- just marketing for beginners."
- "It's not about the cost, it's about the value received," which is lacking in most trade shows.
- "The quality has become so poor that I can make better use of my time using other information sources....Speakers have poor presentation skills, poorly organized material, and most lack the skill to respond to questions."
- Travel budgets are down but the DAMA conference for one is "outstanding and worth the time and expense. Whether management is of the same opinion remains to be seen..."
- Webcasts probably won't replace going to shows since "the quality of these goes all over the map" and it's hard to find the time to listen in.
- As for OracleWorld, one curmudgeon said the only thing worthwhile was "maybe the Wednesday night bash, if they have a decent band." (The SearchDatabase team will be there in a few weeks, so stay tuned for our reports.)
Thanks to those who responded. Feel free to add your two cents by clicking over to our DBA Water Cooler discussion forum (look for the thread called "Are trade shows worth your while?").
Thanks, and have a great week, Tim
