 From the Editor:

by Sara Cushman, Assistant Site Editor

The first major network-based worm of the year hit last week, and it may come as no surprise that Microsoft's technology was the target. The Slammer worm hit SQL Server 2000 databases running on Windows 2000 platforms, causing huge traffic jams all over the Internet. By most standards, the worm was merely an annoyance: non-destructive code sent out simply as an eye-opener. Nevertheless, Windows and SQL Server administrators were dealt with the responsibility of fixing it.

Securing SQL Server systems, and in particular staying on top of all the patches and fixes that Microsoft deals out, is no small task. Even Microsoft's own systems administrators hadn't gotten around to issuing the patch that was issued six months ago for this vulnerability.

Step 2: Fix the problem. SearchDatabase.com's sister site, SearchSecurity.com, has full coverage of the SQL Slammer worm.

Step 3: Prepare for future, and potentially more malicious, attacks. SearchDatabase.com has plenty of resources to help you secure your database. Here are just a few:

For more, try searching for "SQL Server security" in TargetSearch.

Good luck, and feel free to e-mail me to let me know how it goes.

Sara

Tip of the Week:
If you don't require an exact answer, it isn't necessary use a SELECT count(*) query on the rows in a table to get the row count. SQL Server keeps the row count in sysindexes and it can be retrieved there. Andy Novick explains how
