 From the Editor:

by Tim DiChiara, Senior Site Editor

Last week, I wrote about some of the reviews of 2003 and predictions for 2004 that various TechTarget editors produced. I posted my own inevitable list for the database management industry on Monday. What are the biggest threats looming for DBAs? Who do I stick my neck out for and predict will win the acqusition battle: Oracle or PeopleSoft? Read here and find out.

Our Sybase expert Mich Talebzadeh responded to my list with some comments of his own:

  • "I agree with your point entirely that for the DBAs to prosper in this climate and command the rates they have gotten used to, they need to be that much smarter, better informed and, more importantly, add value to the client above and beyond on what DBAs have traditionally done."
  • Mich believes that Linux may be the answer to the economic doldrums in IT but in 2003 "few blue chip companies were prepared to put their mission critical databases on Linux ... because of a lack of enterprise-class support and the fact that the current Linux kernel does not scale well beyond four CPUs. Good times will come for Linux in 2005 when these kernel limitations are lifted."
  • SQL Server did well in Q4 2003 because its "GUI enterprise tools for monitoring and managing databases has been a favorite with those organisations who prefer to deploy so-called 'Jack of all trades, master of none' DBAs." However, "relying on a vendor's GUI to substitute for DBA knowledge and experience is a certain recipe for disaster."
  • Sybase was in "hibernation" in 2003 but will continue to pride itself on "keeping more than half of Wall street trading on its databases, plus ever growing interest in its wireless computing." Sybase will benefit more than Oracle from the rise of Linux because "it is more modular, lightweight and more adaptable."
  • What's in store for 2004? Mich says "The battle between IBM and Oracle with regard to the meaning of grid computing can re-start the market in 2004." If there is interest among customers, that is.

Do you agree with Mich and I? What are your hopes and fears for 2004? Use the new "Sound Off" feature below the article and let us know.

Cheers, Tim

Tip of the Week:
Using DB2's INSTEAD OF triggers
First introduced in DB2 UDB V8.1, INSTEAD OF triggers are very useful when you need to modify the database structure without changing the applications running against the changed database. Here's an introduction.
