We've recently been reporting on efforts by Oracle to make their pricing more competetive in the DBMS market. Often considered the "Cadillac" of database management systems, Oracle has long been scorned for its premium price and convoluted licensing schemes. (Oracle fans, of course, would counter that a premium product is worth a premium price.) Their latest attempts at simplifying and lowering the price is likely due to SQL Server's rapid ascension and the lengthy corporate spending drought. Indeed, at last month's AppsWorld show, Oracle's Chuck Phillips specifically said that the standard edition of 10g will debut with the same list price as SQL Server ($4,995 per CPU).
However, as we all know, there can be a real difference between street price and list price, for two reasons. First, add-on modules can significantly increase the base cost -- Oracle is especially notorious for these "secondary" modules that other vendors offer for free (e.g., business intelligence functionality). Second, list price can be negotiated by savvy buyers, which brings me to a question.
My question to you managers of SQL Server, Oracle, and DB2 shops out there is this: Have you tried negotiating price with the big DBMS vendors? Have you been successful and if so, how much have you saved? What strategies work or don't work? Can small or medium-sized business negotiate price as well? We'd like to post your observations, experiences, and rants in an upcoming article. Email us!
Till next week, Tim
