Sybase continues to defy expectations. Several years ago, Oracle's Larry Ellison made the memorable remark that "Sybase is dead -- may it rest in peace." It's increasingly apparent that they are back from grave.
As we reported on Friday, Sybase is plunking down more than $95 million to bolster its position in the mobile data management platform space by acquiring device management vendor XcelleNet.
Analysts called it an aggressive but risky move. Sybase is using a whopping 17% of its cash assets for the purchase, after all. But it's another clear sign that if it can't recover its long-lost DBMS market share, it intends to dominate mobile data management. Of course, that's practically a fait accompli since they already control 70% of that market. With a mere 3% share in the overall DBMS market, which path do you think is more prudent?
Let us hear your feedback about Sybase's move and your thoughts about their prospects for the future. Should they abandon their DBMS and focus exclusively on mobile computing? Or do they devote too many resources to iAnywhere and not enough to marketing and improving their DBMS and integration products? Use the "Sound Off" feature below the article to offer your two cents.
On a related note, if you have any technical questions about Sybase, be sure to ask our resident Sybase guru Mich Talebzadeh or browse a collection of his previous answers.
Till next week, Tim

An introduction to SQLXML
This chapter from a new book by Ken Henderson describes how SQLXML
technologies are designed and how they fit together from an
architectural standpoint. As with the rest of the book, the author's
intent here is to get beyond the "how to" and into the "why" behind
how SQL Server's technologies work.
