When you first heard the term "remote DBA," did the phrase "unemployed DBA" come to mind?

That likely happened to many of you a few years ago, when the concept began gaining popularity. Remote DBA companies typically offer monitoring, troubleshooting, patch deployment, upgrades, and user account management. Fortunately, initial fears that remote DBA services would steal high-paying, on-site DBA jobs seem to have been put to rest. Indeed, as our article last week Remote DBAs: Not the next big thing noted, temporary remote services might even be welcomed by many over-stressed DBAs shackled to their beepers and afraid to take a vacation.

As consultant and author (and SearchOracle.com site expert) Don Burleson observes, "Companies choose [remote DBA services] to prevent employee burnout and the high attrition rate related to the long hours DBAs typically work... Remote DBA firms should be used to supplement a company's talent pool."

If remote services aren't the biggest threat to DBA jobs, what is? You guessed it: offshore outsourcing. But that's a whole other, far uglier, topic.

Let me know what you think. Has your firm used a remote DBA service? Do you think these companies are a threat to the very fragile DBA job market? Does working for a remote DBA company actually sound better than your current job? Email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED].

Till next week, Tim
