Influential author and relational model evangelist Chris Date made a rare appearence in the US last week, speaking at the DAMA International Symposium in L.A. Most of us data management geeks know Date's work, of course -- if your office doesn't contain a dog-eared copy of "An Introduction to Database Systems," it should!
In his talk, covered here by our own Sara Cushman, Date used the bully pulpit to edify the ignorant masses about Codd's relational model and to respond to its numerous critics. His arguments included:
- It's a myth that relational databases are limited to flat or 2D tables
- The biggest problem with SQL is that it does not implement the relational model.
- NULLs are an over-simplistic solution to a complicated problem.
- Object-oriented DBMSs are a solution to a nonexistent problem.
- XML is out of control.
Read the complete article here, including reactions from author/gurus Joe Celko and Craig Mullins.
I'd like to see some discussion of Date's comments. Do you think
that the relational model will ever be superceded or is it the final word on data managment? In the real-world, are relational DBMS products superior to OO- and XML-based systems or do you use each for a different purpose? Is SQL "good enough" or do you think we should dump it and start from scratch with a new query language? Let me know what you think by clicking on the "Sound Off" link at the top of the article. I look forward to hearing your thoughts!
Cheers, Tim
