Do the words "stodgy" or "static" come to mind when you think of the world of data warehousing?

They shouldn't, according to the originator of the data warehousing concept, Bill Inmon. My colleague Robyn Lorusso over at SearchOracle.com chatted with Bill at last week's Data Warehousing Institue show in Boston.

"Data warehousing is just beginning as an industry," says Inmon. He then offered a few predictions about the direction that data warehousing will go:

  • Storage costs will skyrocket. In the beginning of a DW project, the most expensive component is the personnel but as the years go by, massive data growth causes the most headaches.
  • Archiving technology will become key as data and regulations grow.
  • Central metadata depositories will die in favor of dynamic, distributed metadata stores.
  • Decisions support and BI technologies will increase in importance. Data warehouses themselves are useless unless the data in them can be mined, analyzed, and presented effectively.
  • Unstructured data will proliferate and will need to be integrated, stored and analyzed along with stuctured data.
  • One of the biggest challenges will remain integrating data warehouses around the world -- the global economy and corporate mergers will ensure that.

Thanks to Bill for chatting with us and to TDWI for putting on another excellent conference!

Cheers, Tim
