As we reported last week, Gartner has released the results of its 2003 DBMS market study. Amidst the usual sniping about which vendor is #1, two interesting points emerged.
First, the RDBMS market is finally emerging from several years of stagnation. It grew 5% last year, to $7.1 billion. As the US economy rebounds, IT spending seems to be finally taking a few tentative steps forward. Don't hold your breath, however, for a return any time soon to the "blank check" era of the late-'90s.
A bigger surprise was the growth of Linux as an enterprise data management platform. In 2002, IBM led the Linux market -- a good thing, since they were almost betting the company on it. However, this latest data shows that Oracle has surged ahead, grabbing $207 million in sales and accounting for 69% of the overall Linux DBMS market. Oracle is especially seeing huge increases in Linux sales in data warehouse environments. Ouch. The enterprise-scale Linux market is small, so the war is not
over yet, though Oracle seems to have won the first battle.
My questions to you, faithful reader, are these:
- Does your company use Linux in a production OLTP environment? (Test, development, and web servers don't count.)
- Do you envision ever moving your current Unix or Windows systems to Linux?
- To those that have evaluated both: which is the winner on Linux, Oracle or DB2?
Send me your thoughts at [EMAIL PROTECTED].
Cheers, Tim
